I came out of the store the other day, turned the key to start the Ranger, and nothing happened. Since then, the ignition (power) has been on - the heater fan runs, etc, no matter the position of the key cylinder. It will not start when turning the key all the way to the start position. The steering column lock function does work, however. I did figure out how to remove the key cylinder. I will attach a photo of what I see now.

I'm thinking there is a part in there that must have a tab or ear broken off that normally would engage something when the key is turned, but I'm not sure. My problem right now is that I can't figure out how to remove the green plastic retainer you see in the pic. Anyone know how to get that out so I can dig in deeper? Or ideas on what part is broken?

It's a 1996 Ford Ranger 2WD extended cab, 4.0L V6, automatic transmission, without tilt wheel.

I'll also attach a parts diagram and list. I wish it would be clearer, but I'm guessing the green thing is #15 Ignition Cylinder Retainer, EOAZ3C610A, and the part beneath it, #16 Bearing F2DZ-3E700-A, is broken.

could be the relay or starter fuse or clutch switch
