Default Trans Filter Bolt Tightness

Hey all,

Looking for opinions here. I recently removed my transmission pan and changed the filter after buying my new-to-me 4.0 ranger with 175k. Truck is running great now.

BUT! While installing the new transmission filter (popping it into place), I tightened its center bolt into place just until it got a bit tight. Then a half turn more. I went to then torque it down to the specified 86 in/lbs (I set my wrench to 7 ft/lbs). The bolt kept turning a lot, tighter and tighter, and that made me nervous I would break the plastic filter. Maybe my torque wrench is too heavy duty for such a low-torque measurement? Anyway, i decided not to trust the wrench, and I removed the bolt and lightly tightened it with a socket until it began to resist again. Then I stopped, and I did one final 1/2 turn....(this feeling MUCH like how I tightened my old ranger’s (4x2 truck) front wheel bearing nuts.

Now, I’m thinking that must be way too loose because the 18 transmission pan bolts were supposed to go to 12 ft/lbs....and that felt CONSIDERABLY tighter.

Anyway, truck drives great now. Would u guys go buy a new torque wrench and do the job again to spec? Or leave it alone at just a little snug?

Thanks,
Phil

If your torque wrench had the setting for what you wanted, it's not too 'heavy duty'.

A 2 year old harbor frieght torque wrench* and 5 ft/lbs was the lowest setting. Could really tell that accuracy at that level probably wasn’t there.

Jaysus- this forum is truly dead....getting flamed for asking a question. Thanks to the mods for removing the wacko’s posts.

If the bolt is snug leave it alone. Most people just hand tighten the filter bolt.If your going to do inch pounds buy a inch pound torque wrench.
