Default Only Two Wires on Third Brake Light/Cargo Light Harness

Hi,

I just joined this form today because I need a little advice or help with my third brake light. The third brake light keeps burning out and it appears that the socket is sort of melted. So it looks like it needs to be replaced. However finding this particular wiring harness is proving to be pretty difficult. It looks like the only option I have is to buy the whole third brake light kit, which comes with the brake lights and the harness. However, most come with three wires. Do I need to modify wiring harness running from inside my cab in order to make it work with one of those after market third brake lights? Any advice will be helpful or if you can point me to any how to links or posts that would be great. Thanks

All of the brake light kits I have seen come with 3 wire. 1 wire is ground. 1 wire is for the brake (Red) light. 1 wire is for bed (clear) light. You can chose to only wire the red backup light if that's all your wiring harness has in the cab.

Just cut both connectors off and splice/solder any old pigtail connector or quick connect terminals you find at the parts store. Thats what I did when I added a cargo light to my truck, i couldn't find a factory connector either. If its getting hot enough to melt the connector I suggest switching to an LED third brake light since they run at lower wattage, and are cheaper than factory lights anyway. Just be sure you seal it good. The third brake lights are NOTORIOUS for leaking on these trucks.
