Default Speedometer Calibraation

I didn't find exact information on speedometer calibration through searching. My 2000 Ranger has 248,000 miles and the differential is getting a lot of lash on acceleration/deceleration. Also, a minimally noticeable whine tells me that's the next weakest link in my drivetrain. I refurbished the heads, rings, bearings, timing chain, oil pump, etc. at 220,000 mile, so the engine is still as strong as most any stock 3.0 is capable of being. Stock tires and wheels, 2WD, auto trans. It has the 7.5 open diff (axle code 87) with 4.10 gears. The gear ratio has always killed my fuel economy, so I found an axle code F4 in the local salvage yard. That is the LSD 7.5 with 3.45 gears. That gear is gonna change my speedometer drastically.

The days of changing the speedo drive gear are long gone, so how do I recalibrate the speedo? I'm not big on paying someone else for any work on my equipment or vehicles. If it's possible that a old retired shade tree mechanic can do it, I'd give it a try.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Default Re: Speedometer Calibraation

Easy as pie on a 2wd 98-00 Ranger. If you haven’t heard of Forscan look it up. It’s a free (for PC) software that allows you to have a 90% equivalent factory scan tool. Get a BAFX Products adapter ($23 on amazon) and install Forscan on a Bluetooth laptop.

To change the speedometer calibration you need the extended license. Just have to do some extra steps buts it free.

I’ve done this before on my 2000 and it works great.
