If it works on the bench but not on the truck, be looking for two wires touching that shouldn't be.

Is this the original starter? New starter? New but remanufactured starter? What year and engine? Automatic or manual? does it constantly stay engaged and spinning or just not pulling the gear back in? Need details.

I had a similar issue where once my truck started I could here the bendix gear on the starter still engaged with the flywheel. Turned out being that the flywheel was bent and there wasnt enough clearance for the flywheel to idle without making contact with the bendix gear. The flywheel was bent when putting my motor back in the truck and not lining up the torque converter bolts. Hope this helps someone that may stumble upon this thread.

If the Starter has been recently replaced, and you have a Manual Trans, the likelihood is the counter guy pulled a starter for an AUTO. They are of different sized engagement gears despite both fitting. Easily noticed by the larger bell (side that goes inside the trans housing) vs the slightly smaller bell on a manual trans.

This is true on the OHV, I would suspect the same on the SOHC as well

I would cross reference the part numbers first before R&R a trans to check for a bent Fly/Flex-plate.
