Default 04 raner not charging **solved**

04 ranger 4.0 not charging.
batt light on..dash and works as it should
batt voltage at alt main terminal
key off, yellow wire to alt is 9.5 volts
i changed alternator and same prob
ive read other posts, are similar but dont apply to my year or get me to my fix, but the overall problem seems very common
Battery is good

there is nothing labelled alternator fuse in that panel and the only 2 15 amps are fog lamps and heated exhaust gas sensor

If you have the owners manual, it will show you the fuse locations, what size fuse they should be, and what they do. Well, at least my manual does and mines a 2008.

And to verify, there is no alternator fuse on 04-11 models.

How did you determine the battery is good? Did you load test it?

If not, id bet you have a bad cell in it. If you have access to a DVOM, place the DVOM on the hood when it is open so you can see it. Either by manipulating the leads to the battery take note of:

- the resting voltage
- the voltage drop upon start up
- the voltage as its running [assuming it starts]

if the resting voltage is at or near 12.4v - 12.8v DC great!
if the the voltage drops below or anywhere near 10.2-10.5v that's an indicator of a weak(er) battery, and there is a cell or multiple cells soon to fail. If it drops below 10v there is clearly a bad cell in it and the battery should be replaced.
As it starts, the voltage should be between 13.4v - 13.9v DC, I don't see this as your issue. As mentioned, I think your issue is in the battery.

The only other item i could see is similar to my 95 Ford Escort where the Starter circuit would latch in the ON position without cranking and drain the battery. Again, dont feel this is your issue just thought I'd throw it in because the ALT doesnt always have to be the culprit.

Thanks for the replyI just swapped in a known good battery to test. same results.
Battery takes charge, holds charge, 12.6 overnight
starts truck, no big dimming of headlights when starting with headlights on.
voltage drops to 11.9 when started and slowly drops the longer it runs
disconnect pos cable while running and she dies.

When you say you replaced the alternator did you by chance buy a reman unit? It is not at all uncommon... Hell it is very common to get DOA parts from reman units sold at most chain stores. Sometimes multiple times in a row. I've seen starters and alternators that were just old broken units that they spray painted and sold as remanufactured but the internals were never touched.

disconnect anything that is makin it loose juice. not needed stuff, like radio, sorry bud, and any other items draining your juice on ignition possibly. then id check ignition. hey im laymen!

----------

parasitic battery drain is when abnormal and continuous discharge of power occurs after having shut off the engine. Usually, this is caused by a short circuit or an electrical device that remains in the "on" position or energized, such as:

A trunk
An under-hood or a glove-compartment light
A switch
A computer module
But a battery power drain can also be the work of a bad alternator diode or even a faulty battery.

Depending on the amount of current being drained, a parasitic draw will suck all the juice from your battery in a few hours or minutes.

Here, you have four tests to help you find the culprit:

The amperage battery drain test
The voltage drop battery drain test
The bad alternator diode test
The car battery hydrometer test

That sir is a bad Alternator, new out of the box or not. Back in the day, I remember when the Rockford Pro's first came out.. Big ass heavy speakers. Opened the box, picked up the basket and all of a sudden the speaker wasnt so heavy... Damn magnet structure stayed in the box and left the voice coil dangling in the shop fan breeze... SO much for new

thank you all for replies. Did some more digging. Was getting only about 7-9 volts at yellow/white wire to alternator which should be batt voltage at all times.

I pulled apart the wire harness near battery positive post and there are 3 fusible links there. One feeds that yellow/white wire. Though not blown, the splice for these 3 links was greeeeeen and corroded beneath the shrink wrap covering the factory used. Cleaned and reattached the wires and charging as normal. I'm ready to go for winter.
Hope this can help others.
