Default Camshaft position sensor issue

Hi guys! I have a '96 ranger 2.3L i4 manual.

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction on this issue. I'm getting a code P0340 which is a camshaft position sensor issue. The truck stutters a bit when I hit the gas, it's just a work truck so it's never bothered me much, but it's smog time. So I replaced the sensor and of course the issue persists. So I got a little deeper.

I broke out the oscilloscope and at pin 85 (DK BLU/ORANGE) on the ECU I'm seeing the pulses that the camshaft position sensor is making which seem fine, but when I turn on the headlights, the noise in the signal seems to increase quite a bit. Not sure if this is normal or not, hoping someone can take a look at the pics I included.

Anecdotally, I swear it stutters more when the headlights are on. Any other ideas as to what could be causing this issue if it's not this headlight thing?

Thanks!!

Default Re: Camshaft position sensor issue

There are known p0340 issues like yours on IATN. Looks like you are getting noise from the alternator. They suggest un-plugging it and see if the noise goes away. But you may have stumbled on a better test, put a load on it by turning the lights on. I would be curious to see if other loads like ac compressor would invoke the suspect noise. Anyway, the fix seemed to be replace the alternator as it may be going bad...
