Default Is a new Ford GEM module pre-programmed?

If I buy the GEM module part# by VIN for my 98 Ranger will it be programmed already? I've got a bunch of GEM codes and was told that it needed to be replaced. My Ford dealer says they no longer even have the NGS tester to service my truck since it's so old. It's a 98 Ranger.

It’s possible but did you know you can program one yourself using forscan? (Total cost $20)

I bought one off ebay for $40 for my 1995. So far so good! Be sure to get the correct module for your Ranger.

I think I only saw nos Ford on EBay and I think they were all well over $100. I'm hoping it's just a simple plug and go. Although I do have one of those elm plug in obd2 interfaces and the free Forscan software I don't remember seeing anything in there about programming the gen module. My seat belt reminder doesn't work even with a new buckle, and the speed sensitive wiper function no longer works. I've got a bunch of gem codes some for accessories not even on my truck. I was told that the gem module needs to be replaced.

The main thing for a 2wd that requires programming is the tire size.

The programming function of forscan is only on the PC version.

I wouldn't be able to program it then. I remember reading on some other forum or during a search awhile back where someone said that the units come pre-programmed from Ford. You just need to make sure you order the right one. Mine is 4x2 w/o power group. Would a same part# one from another 1998 Ranger be the best way to go?

Technically you don’t have a GEM, you have a CTM (central timer module).

You can get a 2x4 GEM or a 2x4 CTM and they will both work. The only difference is the 2x4 GEM has the auto down function for power windows.

You need to make sure you get a 1998 though as I think the wiper arm switch resistances changed in 1999.

If you had access to a laptop with Bluetooth you could even get a 4x4 one. You can turn off the 4WABs profile and convert it to a 2x4 version. I’ve done this before.

Only issue is you will have to deal with whatever tire size was programmed into it previously.

I was just reading my Ford service manual and I do have a CTM. If I can find one from a 98 Ranger w/o power group and 225/70/14 tires then I shouldn't have to do anything else.
