Default Unusual door chime problem

I have a 2000 Ranger, 4.0L, 4x4, 4 door. I have this unusual problem that the door chime will continue for about 4 seconds (which is about 4-5 chimes) after I take the key out of the ignition. Sounds normal, right? Here's the kicker, it only happens when I turn the key to run and then off. If I just put the key in and take it out it stops dinging.

I've searched all over the interwebs and can only find either it's on all the time or it doesn't come on at all. I don't want to disable it I just want it to work like it should. I've checked all my contacts in the ignition and the door switch and they all work fine.

Thanks in advance,
Eric

i recall my seatbelt minder chime confusing me a lot because i thought it was about the door or the key all the time lol! i'd often be idling from spot to spot off road, so i'd forget about the belt. does it do it with the seatbelt plugged in?

No change with the seat belt engaged.

My 07 will do that about half the time. When mine acts up, it will chime forever until i either shut the door or gently wiggle or touch the black plastic shroud on my key cylinder. Maybe it's the same problem you are having?? There is a small black flush tab with 2 small wires going into the cylinder (i can't remember for sure but, i think it's on the bottom of the cylinder) and if it's not perfectly in place the key sense will sometimes think the key is still in it and chime.

While yours is chiming for the 4-5 seconds try touching the cylinder without putting the key in it. Hopefully that helps. Good luck!

I just had my ignition cylinder out yesterday and played with it for about an hour making sure all the connections are doing what they are supposed to do. I appreciate the suggestion.

Someone on another forum suggested that there might be something in the ignition/door ajar system that is holding a charge after the ignition is turned off. Maybe someone can point me in the direction of what to hunt down.
