Default Check Engine Light????????

Hey Crew.
Long time no see. I have a 1998 Ford Ranger XLT standard cab short bed with a 4 cyl. used to drive around town. The "check engine" light stays on all the time. I've had it checked by our local shop numerous times and every time it's a different code? Is there any way at all to unplug or disable this light! It's making me krazy. This is not my "Good Ranger", it's our "run to the store" ranger. HELP!

I would start with going to an AutoZone or similar store and have them check it. Write it down. That way YOU know what it is. You didn't mention if the shop did anything to fix it when it was on, or if they just checked it and told you something. Once you know the code, you could fix it yourself.

The first time it was the idle sensor. Been something different every time since.
I did install a new idle sensor but am finished spending money on this truck. I just want the light off. Might take a hammer to it.

Your local shop can't fix the problem?

Hey DVRICH.
Short answer is "yes". Problem is I'm done spending money on this truck. I tried to sell it but seems everyone wants it for free. Even with the light on it runs good and is a solid little truck. We just use it to run errands so the light is just an annoyance. I found out by unhooking the battery for a while the light goes off. Hasn't came back on in a week now. That's all I wanted. I've got $3000 in the truck, listed it for $2500 and would even take a flat 2K but nobody has any cash? I will continue to unhook the battery if and when the light comes on and drive it till the wheels fall off of it.
Thanks to everyone for all the help. Tired~Tim

Good Morning Antdaddy.
I'm wondering the same thing. The last semi I drove before I retired did the same thing. Freightliner took the truck back and replaced the entire wiring harness under the hood.
I'll just keep pestering Auto-Zone and unhooking the battery until somebody gives me a serious offer.

The ECM could be going bad I was told that shooting different codes all the time is a sign of a bad computer. I had a ‘99 that had the same problem and that was one of the things it was doing.
