Default 89 ranger temp guage

Gauge goes to cold with key on then slowly goes to normal when off

What, exactly, are you asking? What does the gauge do when the engine has run for 10 to 15 minutes? Does it go to normal then?

It bottoms out almost instantly when key is on and does not move till key is off for about an hour or so

Interesting. Almost like a short when key is on. Could be a faulty gauge or a faulty sending unit. Just for giggles, try disconnecting the wire to the temp sending unit on the engine and see if the behavior changes. If the gauge doesn't move, try grounding the wire to the block and observe behavior then. If it bottoms out when grounded, that would point to a faulty sending unit. Bear in mind that I have not been a professional mechanic for over 30 years. I work on my own stuff, and a lot has changed in that 30+ years. Maybe RonD or JeffR1 will catch wind of your problem and weigh in. Both of these guys have forgotten more than I know about Rangers.
