From the Odyssey website. ( note they claim you may need to modify or possibly purchase a battery hold down ).

Year: 1998
Make: Ford
Model: Ranger
Engine: 3.0 Liters 182 CID V6
Model #: PC1200LMJT
BCI #: 59
Install Notes: Installation may require vehicle battery restraint(s) modificaton.

Looks like you would need a specialized charger for this type of battery
if the need to charge it comes up.

Thx. Thats what I came up with from that site also but it seems a little small for the space. Maybe that's my only choice then.

I had purchased a Optima battery for my 2002 and I also was not pleased with the fitment or the need for a special charger.

I had an Optima Yellowtop that didn't last 3 years. Never again. The cheap Wal-Mart battery i'm replacing now has lasted longer than the Optima.

Not sure what to tell about the life span of your Optima battery.

My wife's HHR I had a dual Optima battery setup I installed with a power inverter.

When I sold the HHR I removed the inverter and second battery after 6 years and the battery was still good. I sold it for 60 bucks.

But I have seen some post about Optima changed where they produce their batteries.

Optima batteries was company originally started by Gates Rubber in Denver. It was spun off and had a manufacturing plant in Aurora CO, but now I think they are made in Mexico. (another company outsourcing). Quality seems to have gone down as a result.

If I may ask.. whats the intent of the battery's use; anything outside of a daily grinder?

Audio? Offroad use? Offroad trail camping? General use?

I ran an odyssey in my mk1 mr2, never needed a special charger. Made a custom battery hold down for it and it worked great.

http://www.optimabatteryreview.com/

Used to use Optimas exclusively in hundreds of Audio installs, but as prices sored to over $230 for a basic redtop When cost was under a $100 and the batteries have changed in function/longevity and they fell out of mental rotation for me..

Odessey is a bit newer and I cant really debate what I dont know about them.

Ideally I prefer the AGM from Exide mostly because of the abuse it will handle but if I could give anything worthwhile. There are ONLY 3 MAIN battery manufactures, Interstate used to or maybe still does [albeit in Mexico possibly for even cheaper labor and higher profits while raising prices still tot eh end user] and Interstate is/was one of the 3 main battery manufactures out there at one time.

But I will also say that info is at least 10 yrs old...

Went with the Odyssey battery. Installed and working fine. We'll see how long it lasts.
