Can I put these on my 97 ranger? I'm thinking of getting the 5000K bright whites. Also I think i'll get the 35W, but I'm not sure about the different options for 35Ws. Should that work? Or do you recommend something else?

Do I need anything else to put them on? Any different wiring or things to keep it from getting too hot?

Are there any howtos on putting them on once I get them?

^^^ Those are illegal on public roadways both at the Federal level (FMVSS 108), at the state level in all 50 of them, and on every public roadway in Canada, and (wisely) there are laws on the books to address violators (not to mention how inconsiderate and stupid it is to blind oncoming traffic with illegal lighting at night). Every wonder why quality, OEM and replacement automotive lighting companies like Sylvania and Philips don't offer a legal conversion kit, even though if they did MILLIONS of smart people with cash in hand would all. Over. It?

THIS. Don't be "that" guy. I have a set custom made for me, but haven't had time, or the weather, to get them in.
I also have a set installed on my 150, worth the bucks for the performance and looks.
Don't cobble together with 2nd rate rigging. Do it right the first time.

I run 6000k hids with no housings. 35W. They are by far and away not even close to the most annoying/blinding when compared to the new OEM lighting. If you properly aim them you should be fine. Are they illegal yes, do you think that will be your biggest reason for being stopped? I promise its not.

Been running mine for years now and renewed inspections with them installed no problems.

No they are not legal in any of the 50 states or Canada for use on public roads. Like Doug mentioned, the retrofit source sells the needed projectors (keyword), and in many states (mine included) even those are illegal (but I'd do it because it's near OEM quality when the entire job is done right and like most new cars, won't be offensive and blinding to other drivers). The reason the cheap Chinkanese HID's and LED garbage is illegal is because the filament position (aka, lighting source) within the bulb in an incandescent fixture is different than that of the filament position in the OEM bulb, and this has a major impact on the light output pattern.

In a nutshell, the problem that comes about with the illegal Chink HID's and LED's is that the light no longer has a horizontal cutoff line, and as such the pattern is effectively that of a 100W floodlight used on your driveway. Don't be a dick and make it hard for other people to see at night, it's uncool and dangerous, even if a lazy cop won't do his job. So is doing some setup with those the best option, or is there another way to make the lights brighter?

Another thing no one seems to know is that using a decent projector not only gives you a cut off, it also focuses the beam giving you all the power of that hid right where you want it. All the light output is properly focused instead of just scattering all over the place.

No idea what "some setup" means other than c) below, but on the latter:

a) clean your windshield inside and out.
b) clean the headlight + fog/driving light lenses.
c) make sure headlights and fog/driving lights are correctly aimed. This means doing it right, and not being inconsiderate of others by aiming them so high that they are blinded, similar to what happens when people run illegal HID's and LEDs in their incandescent headlight fixture (don't be "that" guy).
d) dim the instrument lighting so it looks like a dashboard and not the Vegas Strip as night; the bright lighting light in the drivers face makes it much harder to see when it's dark.
e) sans a proper projector and HID retrofit, look into SilverStar ultra bulbs.

I'll add PIAA xtreme white bulbs to that. I use them in my ranger and they are the best bulb I've ever owned. I have no desire for more output and they are actually white. When I bought them they were the same price as your run of the mill 1 year warranty hid kit. I see now you can get kits on eBay for like 40$ though. My bulbs have been in the truck for 3 years now and they are still bright as ever.

I run the Phillips Extreme Halogen in the headlights and Hella 3K super yellow in the fogs and I like the combination.

With that said, I would like to retrofit my headlamps to projector beam but continue to run the 9007 halogens in lieu of HID's. Does anyone know if this can be done, I would think so, but I have not found any projector retrofits that take the 9007 bulb. Usually they take the H4, I think it is.

Nope they are just a regular halogen bulb,only built to a much higher standard.
