Check your local laws. I can use the housing I have on my 98 ranger. Just gotta have them aimed correctly where I am at.

Exactly. Call me whatever, but there is no way I am putting high end expensive projectors in a 12 year old truck with over 150K. It may be my baby and I love it, but reality says it is worth very little on the open market.

I put them on my 17 year old with 240k miles. Doesn't matter what it's worth market wise. The fact that I can see better and it's safer is why it's worth it.

I have, and I know well that Federal Laws preside over state laws. I also understand the differences between the bulbs and fixtures, how they work and how to do it right, and the lighting consequences/failure of wrong combinations, not to mention it being both dangerous and inconsiderate to blind other people at night on public roads. Like I've said before, if there was a legal HID conversion that satisfied the requirements of FMVSS 108, you can bet that Sylvania/Osram and Philips would be ALL OVER IT and they couldn't keep the product on the store shelves.

*If you haven't done so yet, I'd encourage you to review FMVSS 108, this is what matters.

And you and few other guys here are smart, and therefore you guys did it right, by investing the coin to buy the correct equipment to accomplish the true benefits of HID's. Not some crappy $50 ebay junk with the words, "for off road use only" stamped on the box so customs didn't intercept them.

LED's are legal in some areas. Read your local laws and make sure they are adjusted correctly. As long as your not running super bright bulbs. Also for the people who haven't been in the loop with newer cars, some cars are coming with LED headlights and fog lights.
The federal regulations on headlights is that they can't be above 3000 candela. Other then at it basically says you have to have them and the housing requirements. Go check out ericthecarguy on YouTube or his website. The only type of head lights I know that got band are the laser headlights on BMW and other extoxics becease of the brightness.

You can do anything you want off road, as for on road the rules and regs are pretty clear and easy to understand. Go to FMVSS 108 and the laws for your state for more details but remember, just because a bulb sold on ebay fits in a socket and/or a fixture fits on a vehicle doesn't make it legal. I won't repeat why Osram and Philips don't make a conversion kit because that's covered in the Federal law. New cars with LED light OEM comply with the Federal and state laws because.....these lights are OEM. Tough pill to swallow when a desired mod isn't legal but if you put good HID's in projectors and thus, don't blind oncomming traffic, you'll probably not be bothered by a cop. Might have a problem in a state with vehicle inspections if the guy is paying attention. Go grab a six pack and check out those local and Federal laws.

Here in the People's Republic of Vermontistan I will keep my OEM housings with the 9007 bulbs for Inspection. They now take pictures of your vehicle from all angles and the computer is directly wired right to the Governor's office to insure compliance <sarcasm> and make sure the nanny state is operating at full capacity <more sarcasm>.

The remaining 364.5 days I will run the projector housings and no one will ever know the difference.

That's why I say check your local laws. I have been reading over federal laws. Stats laws tend to be stricter on the lights. To the people who keep saying that "Phillips" or Sylvia don't make conversation kits, who do you think owns Cree and some of the other bulb manufacturers. Here check out this video. He does the comparison and test.

I'd take a chance on that one, worst they can do is flag it; ok, so you go home and swap in the original lights. Most people know who read into the laws know there is no legal HID conversion, but it takes a wise cop or inspector to flag it and the odds go wayyy down if you do it right by using projectors. Illegal...yeah, a menace to others, no.

Nobody 'owns' Cree. They have purchased several companies since the have been in existence, but nobody has bought them. And also, Cree does not make any automotive application LED's. They will license their particular LED technology to other companies however.

That's the way I read into it as well, Cowboy. Seriously, unless one is into Ford Rangers, 99% of the people out there, including cops and possibly even the people doing inspections, will never know that 05 Rangers did not come with projector housing. Even if they gave it a thought they would not care. Indifference is a good thing here.

I will do it right with TRS Acme projectors (cannot afford the higher end Morimotos). These are made with HID in mind, good quality with a nice sharp cutoff so blinding oncoming drivers is not part of the equation.

For the cops, bigger fish to fry.

Are they illegal yes, do you think that will be your biggest reason for being stopped? I promise its not.

Been running mine for years now and renewed inspections with them installed no problems.
would not follow this advice.

I'm not really sure what you are getting at here. Car manufacturers have been putting HID lighting in cars since the late 90s, the biggest difference which you don't seem to grasp is the housing they are in. That is the difference

True story. Just got off the phone with TRS and had a long conversation with them about their Acme line of projectors. Very reasonable priced and good quality for entry level. Much better then the eBay crap at really no more money. No excuse not to do the job right and install HID with the proper made for HID projectors and sharp well aimed cutoffs. These Rangers are easy to retro as far as I can tell. Takes a minute or less to pull the housings out to work on.

One can spend more bucks if they want but there are cost effective options available from a good company to do the job right even if one is on a budget.
