Air horn - regular horn
Hi everyone,
This is my first post. Just got my first Ranger for my 15 year old son. I'm going to drive it until he gets his license.
It's a 2007 Sport, and the old guy we bought it from installed an air horn. Turns out the compressor was bad, so for fun I replaced all of the components for about $14 from Harbor Freight about a month ago. Today, the horn doesn't sound at all. Checked the connections-- everything looks good. At this point I just want to revert back to the original horn.
I'm new to working on cars, but I love to learn. Can someone help me understand how I would go about hooking up the original horn again?
Thank you!
Shane

Re: Air horn - regular horn
welcome!
i want to say there is a how-to posted on here somewhere... i'll see if i can find it

well, this has some details, but you might be looking for more... either way, i recommend installing the dual note horn from a daul note ranger lol! i did it on an older ranger & it was easy (even though i had to finiggle the wiring because of my old truck). should be easier on yours especially if you have the harness plug in tact: How To: F-250 Horn Install for Single Horned Ranger

Re: Air horn - regular horn
Thanks for the link! Like I said, I'm new to car repair so I have a question about the electrical system in general. See the attached photo. The previous owner was a mechanic, so I'm wondering-- did he cut off the 2-pin horn connector and splice in these connectors in order to do the air horn mod? This is what I've unplugged from the compressor of the air horn and I can see that the wire harness has been modified... How do I revert back to the horn 2-pin connector?

Re: Air horn - regular horn
i think you are correct, looks like those regular ol' spade connectors that you get in a elec component kit... but I hope somebody will confirm that!
this is what you'd be looking for as far as a stock plug/harness connector goes:

Re: Air horn - regular horn
Cool, thanks. Pricey little guy! Another newbie question. So, it's obvious, then, that these two wires are wired up into the horn system since they were powering the airhorn, correct?
I need an automotive electrical 101 or something....

Re: Air horn - regular horn
You can just put a universal horn on also, those spade connectors should just plug in.
Have you tested the circuit to make sure power is getting to the horn? The horn may be good.

most likely I'd assume. if you press the horn & you get 12 volts on one of those conneectors that is

Re: Air horn - regular horn
Thanks Whiskey Mike - you saved me some time and money. Turns out the fuse had blown, so it was a $1.00 repair.
Good news, though, is that I cracked into the world of automotive electrical and I understand a bit more now!
Cheers,
Shane

Good deal, it's easy to overlook the small stuff.

Re: Air horn - regular horn
Spoke too soon - I saw the dome light go on when I replaced the fuse (dome + horn = same fuse) and didn't want to test the horn until I had it re-mounted and in place. Air horn still doesn't work.
Interestingly, though, I do hear a clicking noise coming from the fuse panel when I press the horn.
I'm going to go ahead and get a universal horn and hopefully put this to bed-- thinking the compressor is out on the air horn.

That's the horn relay you are hearing, it's part of the SJB. SJB is essentially a (programmable) body module that consists of a fuse panel (formerly the CJB), other modules and relays that were scattered throughout the dash area. The SJB hosts a variety of functions including PATS (anti theft), RKE (can activate panic horn + parking + interior lights) and a 30 minute bat svg + 10 min interior lighting circuit, and each has a dedicated relay in the SJB. SJB activates and times interior lights for ~25 seconds upon entry or until key is in start or acc. Now you know why you (correctly) do hear it.

Re: Air horn - regular horn
Ahhh...great info - thank you! So I thought I was hearing the fuse getting ready to trip again or something in that neighborhood -- now I get why the noise is really coming from the SJB. Thanks!

Re: Air horn - regular horn
Fuse blows quietly; breaker typically makes a snap. In one of my pic galleries are a few images of the internals of an SJB.
