Have you replaced the cluster or messed with it ever?

Hmm... first, the cluster is black with white needles and the backlight is green, right?

If so, how many miles are on it? Did they seem low for the year or the price?

Does the odometer work?

Ok, the reason I asked those questions is to see if anything was way out of the usual that screamed "this has been messed with."

It seems like nothing out of the usual though... is it consistently 10mph difference, or is the needle off more at some points than others?

Two thoughts. First I thought the 2001 ford ranger had a 2.3 liter not 2.5 as was replaced by smaller motor. Need to swap in a known good speedometer to check.

It was a mid year change for 2.5 OHC to 2.3 DOHC.

Couple things first off it is the black speedo with white numbers and needles and is backlit green sorry ive only seen it once at night literally just bought it. Second it is consistenly 8-10 mph faster no matter the speed across the board it is consistently off
third thing I asked the seller if its been messed with in the past ie light bulbs changed or what ever he said no been off as long as hes owned it which was nine years.
I tend to think he messed with it the check engine light bulb appears to be off or out I scaned it today and have three codes pertaining to the egr and dpfe sensors so he either pulled the bulb or it has burned out overtime doesn't come on when started either.
It just bothers me that in the scan tool data section the speed is correct however its wrong at the gauge. IDK.......????????????????........
Thank you guys once again for all your help
And also it is most definitely a 2.5L not the 2.3L

----------

One other note the odometer and trip seem to be working properly

If it is consistently that amount off, I doubt the cluster was messed with as the speedo would be off a lot more at higher speeds.

However, a good way to find out if it was messed with or not is to take it out and see if the engine light is burned out or missing.

At this point with what I know, I don't think it's worth it to get another cluster to see if it works as there doesn't appear any sign of tampering and the gauge itself isn't broken.

Right on i just didnt think replacing the speed sensor made sense with it reading correctly to the hand held i just dont see what would throw it off between the sensor to the gauge if the sensor reads correctly at the obd 2 port

The fact that your vehicle presents a correct OBD-II speed reveals that the PCM and the items that feed the required data to it are working fine. On the other hand, it's now fairly clear your speedometer itself has an issue (defective, tampered with, etc). Having a valid OBD-II speed is the proof on this one.

***The speedometer gets the speed data from the PCM, not directly from any sensor.

If you need spare parts when you tear it apart, I may still have some extra speedo motors.
