Default GEM Swap Problems 1998 4wd XLT

Experienced problem with intermittent dome light and 4x4 actuator functioning. Trouble shooting led me to GEM. Got used one on eBay, disconnected battery, installed. Problem seemingly resolved but, on test drive when auto trans shifts to 2nd gear, stalls and speedo says I am going 70-100 mph? If I shift the selector to low (1) 2wd, sputters but does not stall when hits 5 mph and shifts to second...idled for 15 min after install and then sputtered around neighborhood for 30 min as a post said it would re-set itself after a while...bad GEM?....used GEM numbers exact match to original.........suggestions?

Probably needs to be flashed to program it to your truck. BOMK they are not plug & play.

Try unplugging the GEM and going for a drive.

Saw this last post after sending back the eBay module believing it was not operating correctly. Bit the bullet and sent off my module to be "reconditioned" for about $200.......sadly seems mine was not able to be reconditioned, bumped me to a replacement that was "reconditioned' for nearly another $200.......... with a promise it would be "plug & play". Good news is this module solved all of my natty accessory problems, most importantly the intermittent 4WD actuator. Been about a week and seems resolved.

Actually, it's called a GEM because it means "generic Electronic module." Being that it is just that, as long as you get the same part number module it is indeed plug and play. However, if you get a different model number GEM it won't work because it is programmed for different accessory setups...per say with or without keyless entry, other items of that nature.
