Default 1998-2000 Ranger 4X4 Gem Module

I have found out that 1998-2000 Ranger GEM Modules DO NOT have to be flashed like those after 2000 model do. There are basically 4 different modules for the 98-00 which are 1 for 2wd without power options, 1 for 2wd with power options, 1 for 4wd without power options, 1 for 4wd with power options which the gem relearns from the PCM after installation and being driven at least 15-20 miles. So as long as you get the same module as your 98-00 has it DOES NOT have to be flashed by the dealership. I got lucky and my Ford parts man found a small dealership going out of business and instead of $400.00+ normally I got numbers matching NOS OEM still in box for $200.00+ tax. Hope this info helps.

There are a series of numbers on my GEM. The one on top seems to be the important one but there is a number after "Made in Canade", then another string of numbers below that? Do I need to match all of them up with a replacement?

Number after "Made in Canada" is a date code and string of numbers under that is serial number of the part so supplier has tractability. You just need to match the XXXX-XXXXXX-XX number at the top.

To all....... Got a GEM on eBay with the numbers matching as you indicate above. Disconnected battery, installed, idled fine in my driveway for 15-20 minutes. Intermittent dome light and 4x4 actuator seemed to no w be working fine as well as all other accessories.
Took for test drive and found that, when the auto trans shifted into 2nd gear, vehicle stalled, re-started with no problem, but same stalling, time after time. Put into 1st on shifter, left in 2x4, and would sputter when the trans shifted at about 5mph but not stall every time. Only other observation is that speedo said I was going 100 mph..... Wrong GEM?....bad used GEM?........any insight would be appreciated.

Do you have 4WABS or RWABS? RWABS trucks use the GEM to send the speed signal to the PCM and instrument cluster.
