Default Hard start

86 ranger. New battery, alt. Starter solenoid. Truck cranks ok in morning. One stop, it cranks like it needs a battery. 2nd stop, won't crank. In 10 minutes, it cranks. My thought is starter. Hear a click when turn key before cranking. Had system advanced checked. All checked fine. Any thoughts?

Check all ground connections for quality and, on a 30 year old vehicle, that they are present where they should be. Do this yourself, ignore the "advanced checked" whatever that's supposed to be.

*Would be nice to know if anything changed before/after these items were replaced and if the replaced items were bench tested.

Just bought truck a few days ago. Had advance check charging system. Used to work for advance. Not real confident on their diagnostics.

Could be that your starter is locking up? You can take it down to most auto shops and they can test it for you.

I just had to replace the starter on my 2000 3.0. Very similar sequence to yours. It would start cold but became slower and slower over a week. I took the battery to be tested and all was fine. The alternator checked in at 14.36 volts at idle. Then it finally refused to start at all. My wife was with me so you can imagine the grief I took from being 15 miles from home in a dead truck loaded with Home Depot goodies!

I pulled the starter and the brushes were almost worn to the wires. I called around and not one parts store (big box, mom & pop, etc.) carried the brush pack for it. A "c-note" later, I had a new starter with a lifetime warranty from AutoZone.
