Default The ranger is out to lunch. Battery not charging

Hello,

I will keep this as short as possible. Thank you in advance for helping

The radio died a few weeks ago and then indicator lights start randomly lighting up, lights dim etc. I replaced the battery. The issue seemed to be resolved until a few days ago when the same thing happened. Radio dies, lights dim etc.

The battery is not holding a charge because the alternator is not charging the battery. After charging the battery all day today and driving 11 km home the voltage meter read 12.01v. With the engine running it was 11.37v. There are no loose connections I can find; leads and posts are shiny. I checked for parasitic draw and got one at almost 2 amps. If I found one that was around 8 I would have started pulling fuses.

I checked the ohms for the mega fuse and it came in flickering between .1-.4 ohms. Is this reasonable? It's supposed to read .5 but I got pretty close.

I checked to see that the alternator was getting power- it is- but it's not putting out power to the battery. I recently replaced the alternator- 2 days ago. I wondered if it was a busted one?

On a whim, I checked The Old Alternator and it showed that the diodes were good on a bench test but other things inside it could be broken.

I am at my wits end (But it's pretty fun at the same time)

I can't seem to find the alternator fuse. There is nothing in my manual about an alternator fuse and no internet search comes up with anything specific. It's the last fun thing I can think of to do under the hood before I begrudgingly take it in.

Jolene

Have the alternator tested at your local parts store or a shop. I'd have brand new alternators bad out of the box

Default Re: The ranger is out to lunch. Battery not charging

Just wanted to report that I changed the alternator twice. The second time worked. For all the unbelievers behind the counter at Napa- it IS possible to get a bad alternator out of the box. It was very surprising to hear everyone who sells these parts say, 'oh, it's unlikely...'

And for the autobody that wanted to charge me 800 bucks to do it. It cost me a fraction of that, a couple tools, a little bit of time and a learning curve.

Thanks for the help.
