Computer Problem with TPMS System?
Hello, folks,
I am having a strange problem with my TPMS system in my 2008 Ranger. I bought the truck last October, and had no problems with it for a couple of months. Along about December when the COLD weather started to hit, my TPMS light would sometimes start blinking after about 20 minutes of driving, and then stay on. It blinks about once a second for 60-90 seconds, then stays on solid for the rest of the trip. I figured due to the truck's age and the cold weather, I had a battery going bad in one of the sensors, no big deal. At first this problem was intermittent, but after a while it happened on every single trip.
I was going to change the tires and wheels out anyway, so I bought these sensors:
http://www.tpms.com/Ford_TPMS_S0885_..._7_p/s0885.htm
Life being what it is sometimes, it took me until just a couple months ago to get the tire/wheel swap done. The sensors installed easily, and were not damaged during installation. I used the procedure outlined on the TPMS.com site to activate the TPMS "learning" sequence, and using the Ford tool to activate each sensor the set-up seemed to go flawlessly. Except that it must not have...
I still get the blinking, then solid light after 20 minutes of driving, every time! The odd thing is, if I stop for any length of time and leave the truck running (they are doing road construction on my route to work), the light will sometimes go off after sitting still for a few minutes, and stay off the rest of the trip.
My truck does not have a message center so I cannot tell which sensor is causing the problem, but is it safe to assume that one of the new sensors is bad? I thought if they all "hooked up" during the learning process, all would be well. Or, is there something going on with my truck's computer? Is there any kind of antenna anywhere for this system? Anyone have any ideas as to what is going on, or how I can correct this problem?
Thanks very much,
Regan

Re: Computer Problem with TPMS System?
Those aftermarket sensors are usually hit and miss. Either deal with the light or pony up and buy ford ones that will work for sure
----------
Plus that isn't even the correct style sensor

Thank you for your reply. If you read the page, this style is listed as a direct replacement. And, the system accepted each sensor during the "learning" process with no problem, so it must be at least somewhat compatible?

So because it's on the internet it must be true?

Re: Computer Problem with TPMS System?
No, because the system acknowledged each sensor, and ended the session without any faults. I do know that there are multiple replacements for the band sensors that do work without all of the hassle of the Ford system.

Re: Computer Problem with TPMS System?
No one else has ever had this problem? Will a tire store be able to tell me if the sensors are working? They work when I program the system per directions, and they seem to send a signal if I stop for a while after the light comes on (enough of a signal to turn it back off), but apparently at least one is not sending a signal when moving. Or, is there a glitch in the truck's onboard system?

Dang--guess I should be happy I don't have TPMS. Bought the most basic Ranger I could.

First make sure all tires have the right air pressure.
Go by the air pressure in your door not the tire
If the light returns then one of the sensors are bad.
It may be perfectly programmed but could still be broken. (reading wrong psi)
A shop should be able to scan and tell you which sensor has the fault

Your ranger takes a band style sensor. They're not correct for your truck and that is your issue. Buy the correct sensors and it'll take care of the issue.

Well, if you buy any vehicle produced after 9/1/07 - it wouldn't matter how "basic" it is/was. You would get a tire-pressure monitoring system no matter what (it's not an add-on or "optional" type of deal).
It's part of the federal law called the "Transportation Recall Enhancement, Accountability and Documentation Act" (TREAD).
IIRC - TPSM has been mandated in all light motor vehicles (under 10,000 pounds) after September 1, 2007 (AKA - Model year 2008). Plus, there was a "phase in period" required on vehicles prior to that as well.

Ummmmmmm - you got it!
However, my post was more for "oldcrowalki" - as his comment made it seem like buying a "base model" Ranger got him out of having a TPMS - when it was a simply based on his model year.
