Default Winch Remote Wiring

I just bought an 04 with a winch bumper, however the winch remote isn't hooked up (inside switch works). Anyway, there's a female plug in the bumper with 4 unmarked tabs. There are also 3 small wires near by that have to be for the remote (black, green, white).

How on earth do I know which goes where? Can I do trial and error or will I pop something important?

Can't find any diagrams, and nothing's marked anyway. Any help would be great!

What make and model winch? That will help a lot. Do you have and know how to operate a multimeter?

This can be an easy problem to solve, you just have to be careful. A few measurements with a meter will make this much easier.
