Dumping stock tail lights and installing trailer lights
Ok, I built a flatbed. I have tried to install some other lights and it just didn't look good. I bought trailer lights and I have some questions on connecting them. I don't want to burn anything out.
These lights have 4 spots to plug wires into. Kinda like this.
{.. ..} The left side says tail. Right side says stop turn. Now the issue is this, they only provide 2 wires per light. Curb side has green and brown, road side has yellow and brown. The current lights have a total of 4 wires. 1 ground, 1 tail light, 1 brake light and 1 turn light. Is there something I am missing??

Yep your truck was a 3 wire system meaning it had separate brake and turn signal. A trailer has a 2 wire system meaning the brake and turn are the same filament. You need a converter box like the Tekonshsa 119130 for it to work right.

Ok, so I could buy a trailer harness that plugs into the existing harness and do it that way?? I think thats what you are saying.... If not, that should work.... Right??? Thank you for the reply

You could do that just have to wire your lights to the trailer harness or get a four way trailer end and wire your lights to that and plug it in. You want to stay away from Hopkins or Curt brand because of their failure rate

Re: Dumping stock tail lights and installing trailer lights
Ok, thanks for the heads up on those. I did pick up the adapter set up from Advanced Auto. I had a choice of "plug and play" or cut the wires and connect. I picked the plug and play. Figured the less wire connectors I use the less chance of a electrical issues. I am going to take the current female plug and cut the wires off flush so it will not leave a open end. Thanks again.

Re: Dumping stock tail lights and installing trailer lights
I connected everything up and it all works. BUT when the brake is pressed the blinkers blink fast..... release the brake and they blink normal. Did I do something wrong?? I did ground the the lights to the frame and not through the wire harness. Would that make a difference?? At least they work but I would like them to work right...lol

Re: Dumping stock tail lights and installing trailer lights
when you apply the brake the rear turning signals are not working which is causing the flasher to flash fast.
You should stick with what ford installed which is the three wire setup, or use a converter box as suggested earlier.

As I had previously posted, I did get the adapter and that is the frustrating part

Remember on the lights they have 2 studs holding them on those are the ground points. Also if you tighten them up too tight it will cause issues also.

Re: Dumping stock tail lights and installing trailer lights
Yes they are grounded good, and I didn't tighten them real tight, just tight enough so the ground wire I connected to the stud stopped spinning, then about a 1/8th-1/4 turn more. I wasn't sure if grounding it to the frame would make a difference. It wouldn't make sense to me, ground is ground.

I don't know how you built your flatbed, or what you 'grounded' the lights to. It is important to note that a more descriptive term would be 'common', also the negative side of the battery. I have seen items 'grounded' but it was in reality not the same ground as say, the power source, which caused problems.

Re: Dumping stock tail lights and installing trailer lights
Ok.... I put the black wire/negative/ground/common wire to the bolt from the light (grounding point as said on the light itself) and then said wire is attached to the bumper where I installed my reverse/back up lights. The reverse/backup lights are negative/ground/common to the same spot.
