Check Engine light wont leave me alone
My check engine lights been on for a while, but nothing is wrong with it. It all started when I had to hit my brakes rather quickly. Didn't slam em, but it was fast and sorta hard. The ABS light went on and went away after about an hour of driving, but the check engine lights been on ever since then (this was months ago) any ideas?

What is the code? Have you even had the code pulled?

Re: Check Engine light wont leave me alone
You take your truck to a shop, or even an autozone. They plug in a device that reads the computer for saved issues, in the form as a code (example: PO305) and that code tells you what the problem is.

I am a little baffled by an inspection that passes vehicles with an illuminated CEL. But ok. Autozone can plug into the OBD2 port and read the codes. They will give you something like P0172 or something. Then you can look up that code and it will tell you something like 'upstream O2 sensor not heating' or whatever. Then you can fix it. Here they won't let the stores clear the codes anymore. But they are usually willing to look away while YOU press the clear. If the fault is still there, it will just come back though.

Oh alright thanks, now that you said O2 sensor I actually think it was an oxygen sensor that wasn't working but I'll have to check that. Thanks!

It depends on state. West Virginia will pass a vehicle with a CEL on

Emissions test or vehicle inspection?
----------
Edit: Actually does seem odd it would pass either type of test / inspection. Emission test fail is a no brainer when it comes to a check engine light.
I mean what good is a State mandated "vehicle inspection" - if you don't address a check engine light along with the other items? Coming from a state that doesn't require "vehicle inspections" (only emission testing for populated areas) - that seems like a joke. They could at least cover it all. lol

This was my point. Why bother inspecting if you are going to ignore vehicle diagnostics that are stating faults? In that case what are you inspecting? As you know we don't have safety inspections here, but a CEL is auto fail for emissions. Unless you plan ahead enough to drive by the vans twice...
I'm glad somebody got it...

Vehicle inspection headlights, turn signals, reverse lights, ball joints/bearings, leaking brake lines/twisted brake lines, and last but not least rust.

Re: Check Engine light wont leave me alone
No one has asked what year the truck is. If it's a 95, it's OBDI. In which case, it may be exempt from emissions inspection. At least it would be here. Since OBDI is rather dumb compared to OBDII, let alone canbus based OBDII.
