Default instant power killer

I've got a wierd problem...I thought I'd run it by you guys before I start replacing parts.
When I turn the key it goes click, sparks briefly fly from the positive battery terminal, then the entire electrical system dies. The motor does not turn over at all. The system is dead until I reconnect my battery charger, then it resets...dome light comes back on, and I can try again...same results. I load tested the battery and it is good and fully charged. Anyone ever experienced this? Any ideas.
My next step will be to replace the starter solinoid, then the starter itself. Unless you have any better ideas.
Thanks in advance!

If sparks are flying from the positive terminal, then I would start by disconnecting, cleaning, and reattaching that terminal. Sparks don't fly across a good connection.

Thanks. I have cleaned the terminals very well...that is one of the wierd things. When the sparks fly they go straight up...I've seen them jump up about a foot. Sometimes sparks don't fly, I just hear a click and the power goes.

Does this happen when you turn the key to ON or when you turn the key to START?

You have a dead short somewhere between the starter solenoid and the starter. Or in the starter.

thanks, I'll recheck the wires, then replace the starter. I'll let you know how it goes.
