Default "New battery, good cables, confirmed good starter but no start, lights etc."

Hello all,

This is my first post, besides the intro. I hope all are well. I'll try to be as briefly detailed as possible. 2001 Ranger, 2x4, 3.0. Stock. I began experiencing dead batteries. Cleaned the connections and all was fine for a while. Then one day while driving down the road, it died. Upon restart attempts, the starter would turn but not engage the flywheel. Towed it home. Replaced the battery and connections. Tried to start. One click and done. Nothing. No power to anything. All fuses checked out. Pulled starter and had it tested twice. Starter is good. Cleaned starter connections and reinstalled. WOW! Power to the dome light, headlamps, etc. Tried to start. One click and nothing. No more power to lights and accessories. The lights, click no lights is the most puzzling to me.

I searched other threads, but was unable to find the same combo of problems. If I missed it and am asking an already answered question, I apologize and please direct me. Redundancy bogs a forum down. Otherwise, any help will be much appreciated.

Take your jumper cables and clamp on to a steel bracket on the motor than clamp to the negitive cable on the battery and try to start the motor if it starts you have a bad ground.

After you try and start it and the lights go out, if you open the door does the dome light function at all?

Sounds like a really bad short some where. Or a really bad connection on something. The thing that I question is why it would have died on you. It should have ran off the alternator even if the battery was dead. Have you had the alternator tested?. Could be a direct short in it!!.

Not sure if it will work or not but you could try unplugging the alternator and see if it will start and run on the battery?.

No dome light and no power to anything. It;s as if the battery were dead, which it isn't

That didn't work, either.

Maybe a bad relay or something to do with the security system, if you have it.

Check the fusible links. A lot of people tend to forget those exist. Here's a good video overview on how to check and repair them:

Even though I have yet to figure this problem out, it's awesome knowing I have a great group of folks here to offer knowledge, experience and ideas. THANK YOU!

When the sun comes around again, I'm going to be combing the wires for a short, checking relays (where is the starter relay on a 2001?) and checking the fusible links.
