Default HVAC Blower motor problems

Hope this is the right place to ask this question. I have a 92 Ranger, 4 cyl, stick shift. This past winter, I started my truckturned on the heater blower and SMOKE AND SPARKS came out of the defroster vent. Hmmmm. I shut the motor off, opened the window to air the cab out and started up again. Heater works fine (and now so does the AC) but, I have only one speed on the blower; full and off, My question: What happined and how to fix it. Thanks for any help.

The blower motor controller had a meltdown. The sparks and smoke were the meltdown in progress. The blower only working on high is because high speed is direct power not going through the controller's rheostats. Its an easy bolt-on part under the hood where the wires go to the blower motor.

Its just the controller that the wires and fan plug into.
