Speedo not working, ABS light on...
My front drivers side speed sensor is out, I know for a fact, and the speedometer receives a speed signal, I also know for a fact.
Everything else but the speedometer and odometer works, I just got back in from swapping it out with a new dash. still no luck. any ideas what could cause it? Fuses 10 and 11 are good.
I'm just scratching my head on this one. Any help would be amazing!
thanks in advance!

Re: Speedo not working, ABS light on...
Probably your sensor on top of the differential. I think this is the main signal the abs converts for the instrument cluster.
Did you fix your front sensor?

I agree, I'd replace the sensor on the rear differential. sounds like the culprit to me anyways

How do you know it's getting a signal?

If your speedometer isn't working, the ABS sensors isn't what sends signal to the speedo. The speed sensor for the speedometer in 01+ rangers are in the transmission.

Is it literally inside like I'd have to pull the transmission to replace it or is it plugged into the outside?
Dumb question probably but I've never messed with anything speedometer related.

It's on the outside, it's a plug that you pull. On 4x4 Rangers I believe it's in the transfer case.

Okay cool thanks for the info I'm gonna have to check into that. Do you think replacing the sensor on the rear diff would be a good idea too as mentioned in the other comments? Or start with the one on the transmission?

98-2000 used the sensor on the rear as the speed sensor. 01 went back to the transmission mounted sensor. Forgot about that
----------
Gonna be called output shaft speed sensor. Should have grey/red and dark blue/yellow wires
----------
Part number should be SN7305 by Borg Warner. About 60 bucks.
----------
Btw do you have a check engine light? Since this sensor is directly connected to the pcm I'm thinking it should set a code.

It did not throw a code.
the only code the truck threw was a O2 sensor that I fixed a few weeks ago.
As I said, the ABS light is on, would it be an ABS code?

Automatic or manual?
If automatic does it shift out of 1st when driving?
If yes, do you have cruise control?
If yes does it work?

Re: Speedo not working, ABS light on...
This is from the shop manual (copied from a post by rwenzing). Do this and see if you get 4 flashes:
Do not start engine during this test. Transmission in Park or Neutral with parking brake applied.
Put the key in the ignition and hold the OFF button on the speed control then turn the key to the on position and then release the OFF button. This puts the speed control in diagnostic mode.
Within 5 seconds of releasing the OFF button, start pressing the buttons in the sequence shown below:
ON
RESUME
COAST
SET/ACCEL
(For each button pressed, the speed control light should flash ONCE, indicating that the pressed button is working.)
If, after pressing the last button (SET/ACCEL), the speed control light flashes:
2 flashes - defective brake pedal position sensor and/or a bad clutch pedal position sensor or the circuit is defective.
3 flashes - Brake deactivation switch is open or circuit is defective.
4 flashes - Vehicle speed signal is out of range or circuit is defective.
Immediately after the last flash code is complete, the speed control servo will pull the throttle open and then release it. This should be watched to check that the throttle and cable are not binding or inoperative for any other reason.
Although it is rare, it is also possible that this code could flash early during the diagnostic procedure.
5 flashes – Speed Control Actuator defective.
Turn ignition switch to the off position after test.

okay... Well, that did nothing, no lights indicating anything, speed control light didn't flash at all and apparently none of my buttons work...
