Default electrical problem shifting into overdrive

The problem I am having I thought was the transmission but I have now had two different transmission places tell me there is nothing wrong with the tranny.

First off this is on a 99 ranger 3.0 with the 4r44e trans.

When driving down the road it does not want to shift into overdrive unless I let off the gas pedal a little bit. I will run it up to 3000 rpm and let off the gas and it drops into overdrive and rpms go down to 2000.

It shifts fine otherwise and is not giving off any codes. I was told by the transmission re-builders that everything in the tranny checks out fine. Fluid is good all solenoids and servos are working. No sign of any pressure problems.

Ok here comes the fun part. both shops are convinced that it is something electrical in the motor or driveline (tps/vss/ect). But after researching them I could not find any of them that would cause this effect.

Any help at all would be great. I don't want to just throw money at it in parts and hope for the best. So I hope some one has come across this before.

My truck sometimes does the same thing. Just left off the gas a little and it will shift. My truck on the highway doesn't like to keep speed. It will search for gears like crazy between over drive.

Mine stays in gear once it is in overdrive. Just drives me nuts trying to figure out what it is. I thought after taking it to a transmission shop that all my worries would go away but instead it just created new ones. Let me now if you figure out what is causing yours and I will update the info once I get mine fixed in case you have the same problem.

My truck will do what yours is doing. It will stay out of over drive unless you left off a little and go back into it, it will shift. I don't think it's an issue with anything. My truck has always been like that.

How many miles have you driven it like that?. Just curious before I spend big$$ trying to fix it.

Little update if some one comes across the same problem. Turns out the ranger uses to temperature monitoring systems. The temperature sending unit is what controls the gauge on the dash and shows you how warm the motor is. The temperature sensor tells the PCM when the engine is up to temp so it will lean out and allow overdrive to kick in and lock up. My sensor was bad and caused all the headaches. It thought the engine was cold all the time so it ran it rich and stopped it from wanting to go into overdrive.
