It aint cheap, but the honestly the best way to do it would be to go to wal-mart and buy the plug in trailer wire kit. all is does is plug into your factory brake light wiring. Its simple plug and play wiring and it keeps you from having to cut wires. pulling a trailer from the bumper will work fine, I hauled some crazy loads to the scrap yard using my bumper, but one thing you will have to watch is not getting into your bumper with the trailor when you start backing up. I ended up welding up an "L" shaped peice of metal which I bolted through the factory hole in the back bumper and this allowed me to move the ball back about 5 inches which was just enough to keep me from getting into the back bumper when I had to back around tight corners. My ranger was a 94 4cyl 5 speed regular cab short wheel base 2wd. I hope this info helps.

If you have to turn really sharp, maybe, but usually you only have the issue with getting into the back bumper when you try to back up and instead of going straight, the trailor kind of jack knifes on you. Without that little bit extra length you will bend your back bumper every time. If you notice on most reese hitch setups when the receiver is attached the ball usually sets a few inches behind the back bumper instead of being almost flush with it like the hitch. This is the reason. Unfortunately when I sold my old truck the guy told me he would come back by so I could take it off and he never did. I am currently looking for a reese hitch at the junkyard to put on my current 94 ranger. I don't know if you have many junkyards around your area, but if you do, take a couple wrenches and a breaker bar with you, at some junk yards you can pick one up for 50 bucks if you take it off yourself.

Just about any auto parts store sells a wiring adaptor that plugs right into the existing wiring. There is a plug connector right behind the spare tire rack that it will plug into.

This is the harness connector that would be plug and play for trailer wiring.

I really don't understand what you mean when you say you removed the wiring harness to remove the bed because it isn't necessary. All that you have to unplug is the taillights and the ground to the bottom of the bed.

As for the bumper towing, you will be fine if all you are towing is a small trailer with a lawn mower. Reese makes bumper hitch things that bolt to the bumper, but will accept an actaul receiver hitch so it would be easier to have your trailer level.
