Question starter problem

Hey could anyone help me with a wiring diagram in color for 2004 ranger 3.0 5 speed? When I push in my clutch my starter will engage when engine is already running. This will happen in any gear while driving or revs. If anyone had this problem I could use pointers.

You shouldn't be trying to turn over the starter while the truck is already running. As for your truck starting in gear, without the clutch being pushed In ( I think that's what you're talking about) your CPP switch could be bad. I know mine is.

Go to www.bbbind.com .

Select TSB Database, then Wiring Diagrams. Enter your truck info. From there you can choose what Category you need. It's all there, including wire colors to help you trace problems.

What is happing is I can put the key in and push clutch and truck will start. But also when truck is already running and I'm trying to shift gears get going or moving down the road. I push in the clutch shift and start will kick in.

That sounds like a key switch problem. It seems to be sticking in the start position. Pressing the clutch completes the start circuit.
That's where I would look first.

If it were the start relay or solenoid, I believe it would engage the starter all of the time.

Oh, so when you push in the clutch the starter starts to turn?

Like mile said, it completes the starting circuit.

I agree that the switch is getting stuck to the "crank" position, and will only crank when you push the clutch in. That's the only thing I could see that would cause that, or another wire has shorted to that starting circuit which is causing it to do that.

ok so I changed the ignition switch and no change. so Im guess like y'all said is a wire. Would any of y'all now what wires I need to look for? I don't know the color of the wires to check. My chilton manuel only shows for automatic transmission.

A few members around here recommend going to bbbind.com. They have every single wiring diagram out there. The clutch completes the circuit so it can signal to activate the starter, which is done by turning the key to the crank position. There is something in there that is either grounding or giving power to that circuit when it isn't supposed to. Think of the circuit as a circle, and in certain places in that circle that are open that act like "switches" that when closed, complete the circle, and when open, make gaps in it. You need to figure out whats staying closed.

I have been a big advocate of BBD.

They are kind enough to put this information online for free, I will say I think they deserve your consideration when you need a part they sell. Anyhow...

Go to www.bbbind.com .

Select TSB Database, then Wiring Diagrams. Enter your truck info. From there you can choose what Category you need. It's all there, including wire colors to help you trace problems.

I do appreciate input and help. Anyhow I figured out what the problem was. The master cylinder safety switch was issue. The contacts in the switch that work with a spring system. I think the little springs wearing out and was junk getting in switch cause short out. So I bypassed the switch by soldering the slides on switch. Zip tide the switch out of the way because I did not put switch back together on master cylinder. Instead I covered to back of the switch with peace plasic and electrical tape. Reason I went with this method is in future I can't buy new switch and put it back stock. Saving headaches with splicing wires on the plug in the switch.
