Default Speedometer/Odometer Only Work When Cold

1996 Ford Ranger
4.0l, 4x4, Manual Trans

My current problem is the following,

My speedometer/odometer seem to only work when the truck is cold. As soon as it's warmed up the speedometer drops to 0 with the occasional spike up to the proper speed and the odometer stops turning over.

I have already replaced the VSS and this did not remedy the issue. It seemed a little more sporadic in the summertime so I figured that was the issue, but now with it around 0 degrees it works fine until the truck is fully warmed up every time.

I do have a scanguage II which plugs into the OBDII and gives me the proper speed readout even when the speedometer/odometer arent responding.

The rest of the cluster seems completely unaffected by this.

The cruise control still works fine even when the speedometer is reading 0.

I'm pretty sure it has to be something to do with the speedometer itself in the cluster because its still reading the correct speed from OBDII and cruise works aswell as all the other cluster readings.

Any advice?

I'm not too familiar with the cluster...but this might apply:

The stepper motors on the back of the cluster used to be a huge problem on a ton of GM vehicles. They would fail & the speedo would stick or freeze at zero.

Might see if you have something similar.

Sounds like a bad solder joint in the cluster.

The heating of it causes parts to expand and likely disconnect electrically or short.

Hi,

I’m john this is my first post so here we go.

98 Mazda b2500

Ok so I've read a lot of threads on this and haven’t seen any that compare to mine, granted I don’t look very well... that’s what my wife says.

Odometer doesn’t work, only when cold.

Changed the speed sensor and cluster and nothing changed anyone know what it could be?

Did you get your speedometer issue fixed? I have a 98 Ranger and the speedometer works intermittently.

That is a bad speedometer motor, as stated earlier due to old solder joints breaking.

If you PM me I can either fix your cluster or sell you a new one (if you don't have a tachometer or if you want a white / silver one) and I stand by my work if you have issues afterwards.
