Default Rear Axle....Good or Bad?

So I came outa the woods the other day with a few issues....a few of em aside... I'm now screeching around turns like both my rear wheels are locked together..... I took it to the dirt and kicked up some dirt,,,both tires are pulling leaving equal tread marks.... is this normal? I cant seem to remember if its always done this.....

is the rear still engaged? or something?

Do you have a limited slip axle? You are barking tires turning on dry pavement now where you weren't before?

remove wheels, remove drums, clean drum area. You most likely have gravel stuck up in your drum. I've had that happen before, but never suffered the symptoms you're describing.

OR...are what you're describing is that you got it on loose ground and both tires are spinning when power is applied? If so, you may have a limited slip in there. Limited slips won't be 'schreeching' around corners....that's more like a locker attribute. If power is applied around tighter, slower corners, yeah, an LS will begin to slip the tires on the pavement. Same thing it does on loose ground.

yah...seems like like a locker, though the only possible one atm is a Detroit Locker malfunction which I hear is very unlikely. I dont hear screeching on loose ground like dirt becuase I havn't been on it as much lately, but will do whatever you want me to try to figure this out.. But on dry pavement, it DONT do it everytime and NOT always as I'm applying throttle...its been around tight turns, but i'll see when else it will do it tomarrow. The guy nI bought the truck from said he blew the rear and just put a new one in before I boughbt it, but I dont remember what he said about the upgrade....it has 4.10's but thats pretty normal for a 98 4x4.

Only thing I can ask, is if I jack up the rear, should each wheel spin freely? or should the other counter turn?

my only guess is the rear is stuck in 4wd,(unlikely?) or there is a Detroit Locker in there.....which would be awsome as hell! lol

oh, btw, I hear a clunking every once in a while around a turn too, which I'm think at the time is coming from the rear, but I see grease leaking from both cv joints so I'm guessing thats what the clunking is, unless someone knows something Idk yet.

no quotes...just bulletpoints....

-You DO NOT have a detroit in it unless you had it already in there before.

-If you jack the back end up, spin a wheel forward and the otherside goes the same way, you've got LS or a locker back there. If the other side goes the opposite way, you've got an open rear end.

-All this locker talk is bogus because you're making it sound like this 'issue' just all of a sudden started happening.

-Pop off the differential cover, drain the fluid, and do a little inspection back there. Check and confirm what differential is back there. Next to the big gear(the ring gear) and inside a 'case', you'll see 4 gears. If there's an "S" piece of metal, that means it's a Ford TracLoc limited slip. If you're missing that, it's an open ass. Check the big gear(ring gear) and the one deep in the housing(the pinion gear) for chipping. Also check the carrier(what the ring gear bolts to) for cracks or anything abnormal. Also check those 4 gears inside the carrier....the 2 side gears and the 2 spider gears(the center pin/crosspin slides through the spiders).

thnx dude....firstly waiting to jack up the rear when it stops raining,,,,

on a side note...I never really said 'Its the Locker' , just that the way its taking turns, is like a locker..then mentioned the D-locker cuz any other kind I would know about..but just trying to clear the air.. lol

Was thiking last night, maybe the gear oil is low, how would I check/add that?? Like I said its raining, and a wet ground just turns me into a lil girl lol

So it finally stopped raining and I was able to crawl under the truck and see what was clunking around every turn....
Firstly, I see a hole the size of a dime on the differe cover....pop here off and here she is,,,

I'm inexperienced in rebiulding these things so prob a new rear is best. I got a 4x4 and dont want to regear the front end, so if another 4.10 7.5 is my only option plz let me know... but If i can get a 8.8 from a newer Ranger, that'd work?

any recomendations plz....i dont think I want to get anything with rear disc either....more work then I'm ready for.... my DD

is there anything else wrong with it other than the spider gear?? Even if there isn't, you are a little admitedly inexperienced in axle work and i'm not gonna teach ya(not hatin', no worries)....I suggest getting a new axle. It's cheaper that way too and easier. IMO, look for a 8.8 4.10LS. www.car-part.com. Any year will bolt up to your truck.

awsome dude..... I got someone else telling me the 8.8 4.10s would not be a direct bolt in and I'd have disc brakes but I think hes thinking of me doing a Exploder swap... but I'm open to all suggegstions atm.. I would love nothing more then to pick up a newer model Ranger axle with 8.8,

No offense taken on the axle....It's always been something I procrastinate to learn..and I dont feel like learning(experimenting) right now! lol

this will be no problems with the front axle gears in 4wd?
