Angry Front Differential...needing help!

I have a 2003 Ranger XLT 4x4.

Im having a winding/howling noise in the front end. So I took it to the repair shop and the shop told me I need to have my front differential rebuilt. Does anyone know how much the parts are? and how many hours it would take to complete the repair? Just wanting to make sure I don't get ripped off... Thanks.

That's surprising never seen anyone needing a rebuild unless all the fluid leaked out. I would bank more on wheel bearings.

fluid levels were at the right amount, just a failing part(s). How much are the parts and hours to complete job? Any ideas?

You're looking at about $340-$450. That's for both sealed bearing assemblies, because that's more than likely your issue. Just because Billy Joe Bob says it's your front differential doesn't mean it's your front differential. Second opinions are so important these days. Honesty is a thing of the past.

Well I took it to 3 different shops, all different things at each stop.
shop 1 - told me everything was good, just needed an alignment and wheel balance.

shop 2 - told me i did not need a wheel alignment but needed a wheel balance, so I got the tires balanced. They Didn't say anything about the noise I was having.

shop 3, which was the shop that orginaly replaced my left wheel bearing, and both sides of upper and lower ball joints. This shop then looked today at my truck, and told me that the noise im hearing is coming from the differential. Everything else has been replaced already, and they told me there was some play and abnormal wear and tear, a part had failed. So reccommended I get a rebuilt differential, which his estimate was a $1,000 with parts + labor.

Tell them to stick that 1k up their ass! A brand new top of the line locking rear ECTED diff is only $700

Much cheaper new options, forget rebuilt

$1000 to rebuild the front diff is a damn rip off! Can you turn wrenches? If you can I suggest swapping in a new center section from a salvage yard. Make sure it has teh same gear ratio as your stocker.

oh ok wow. Im not really paying for it though, I have an extended warranty and the warranty said they will cover it since its part of the drivetrain.... Extended warranty covers the important things....engine, trans, and drivetrain stuff. So If I have a warranty I guess I use it....haha
