Default 89 Ranger 2wd- convert to 5spd from auto?

My 89 ranger has a pretty major leak from the front of the trans. I am considering various options, including swapping in a 5sp, which i would much rather have than the auto.

How hard is this? It seems to me that dealing with adding the clutch pedal and linkage could be a nightmare. But, maybe it is not too bad. Anybody here done this conversion?

LK

replacing the seals on the auto would probibly be easyier and cheaper, as long as it still shifts good.

for a 5 speed swap you're gonne need the trans, clutch & brake pedel assembly, the slave cylinder, driveshaft(s), (transfer case if 4x4) and possibly the trans tunnel floor hump. not really tough to swap just gotta find all the parts that will work togeather properly.

I just finished this on a gen 3 4x4. If your keeping it 2wd theres no need to change driveshafts. You need the clutch, flywheel, possibly a starter, clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder, pedal assembly as well as the transmission itself. Theres an aluminum plate on the trans tunnel that you can either cut a hole in for the shifter or replace it with one from a manual. I chose to cut mine. If its a V6, you have to remove part of the Y pipe or the whole thing if it unbolts nicely. I had to cut the section that crosses the radius arm crossmember off. If you have 2 people you could do it in a day. You also have to jump 2 wires to make the computer think its an automatic in neutral. Also you have to make a jumper harness for the reverse lights. Some say you have to change the computer, I didnt. Just make sure you plug the vacuum line that used to go to te auto, otherwise you will have a high idle

Ok- I'm abandoning the idea of converting to manual. Now, about putting in seals on the old tranny- do you still need to take the tranny all the way out, or is this something you can do by disconnecting and pulling back a bit, or something like that?

I assume that there is just a front seal. What else should be replaced while the tranny is out- engine rear main seal maybe?

Is there anything that you would do to the tranny while it is out? I figure it would make sense to pull the pan and get as much of the old fluid out as possible, but what else?

Would it be prohibitive to run it over to a transmission shop and have them check it out or something?

Thx
