Clutch replacing issues
Ok, I know this is long, but I'd really appreciate anyone who knows about this stuff and is willing to read the entire thing. So my 1999 Ford Ranger xlt 5speed 2.5 I4 was having shifting issue, so I decided to replace the clutch. Well, I got a friend who owed me money and supposedly knew how to do clutches to do it, and he royally messed up. First off we got what was supposed to be a performance Centerforce kit for it from JC Whitney. Unfortunately, when we got it, unlike the ad said, it did not include a new throw out or pilot bearing or a CAT. Well, we got a universal CAT and attempted to wing it. Got everything back together drove it down the road and back and oh no now it won't shift and no clutch pressure. Replaced the master cylinder, clutch pressure, but still won't shift. Well, one of my friends had dropped the tranny on concrete, so we thought it might be that. Got a Ford tech to look at it, so he said that clutch got chewed up. Put in a new OEM clutch with all new bearings and the proper CAT and a new master cylinder. Returned clutch pressure, but now it's locked in 5th gear. New tranny. Now the clutch pressure is gone again. Looks like the slave cylinder is done and possibly blew the new master cylinder. Anyone else have any kind of issues like this?

Re: Clutch replacing issues
Doubt your master is shot. Probably just the slave. And the throw out bearing too perhaps. Damn shame you have to keep revisiting this job. Bench bleed the master too.
Why oh why didn't you do the slave cylinder when you had it apart? Oh well, second guessing doesn't help.

Re: Clutch replacing issues
Ranger are known for being a bitch to bleed, maybe thats why you couldn't shift? There is alot of stuff I can do on my Ranger, however when it comes to clutches I will not touch them. There is just too much someone can mess up or over look. Sorry this doesn't help, but its worth to pay the $1000bucks to have a ford dealership do right; the first time.

Thousand bucks? That include flight too Vegas and all lap dances? It's about 125.oofor the clutch and just under a hundred too put in for a shop nearby that will guaranty its done right. For a grand, a new manual transmission should be put it.

Re: Clutch replacing issues
We did bench bleed it. That's how we got pressure back before the new tranny. Then we did it again when it lost pressure after the new tranny was installed and no such luck this time. I didn't know the slave cylinder needed to be replaced every time the clutch was replaced. I felt stupid as mess when I read that in the manual. I'm just getting absolutely tired of this job. It's been a month without my truck trying to get this done.

shouldn't have bought a clutch from jc what ever
when you do a clutch you just replace everything
and you have a throw out bearing and a pilot bearing
I do not what this "CAT" bearing that you speak if it
your slave is toast
side note
If you don't know how to fix don't fix it yourself
I don't know how to do TTB ball joints so I'm paying someone (a ford tech) to do em but I can do a clutch so I did my trucks clutch my self

Re: Clutch replacing issues
CAT is the clutch alignment tool. The plastic rod that's used to align the clutch with the pilot bearing when you bolt it on.

That'd be impossible for him to put his tranny back in if he did.

Re: Clutch replacing issues
Ford Dealer is $1,000 bucks, and just like another member in this tread said, he paid a grand at another shop. However if my truck was a 4x4, it most likely would of upped it by $100-$200bucks.
Have you seen the priced on OEM Ford clutch/pressure plate/slave/bearings? They are about $350 bucks alone. So that brings about $650 for the labor. And labor is $100bucks an hour period, no matter where you go.
---
I change/do my own work on everything I am able to do, from coil packs/ to changing the tranny fluid. However when it comes to a big job like that, I don't have the experience or the tools.

I don't know where your buying clutches (or maybe just the clutch disc alone?) but at $125 for a clutch/pressure plate/slave/bearings/etc you buy be buying china crap. I use to have an auto-parts clutch/pressure plate/etc and they don't last, their clutch disc are okay, but their bearings tend to fail. I also don't like the feel of their clutch. The ford clutch is just more grabby/smooth compared to a cheap one.
Also included in my price was resurfacing my flywheel (at 200k I decided this time to have it done).
