I replaced my clutch, slave cylinder, and flywheel myself for about 500 bucks give or take.

Have you seen the priced on OEM Ford clutch/pressure plate/slave/bearings? They are about $350 bucks alone. So that brings about $650 for the labor. And labor is $100bucks an hour period, no matter where you go.

I change/do my own work on everything I am able to do, from coil packs/ to changing the tranny fluid. However when it comes to a big job like that, I don't have the experience or the tools.

I don't know where your buying clutches (or maybe just the clutch disc alone?) but at $125 for a clutch/pressure plate/slave/bearings/etc you buy be buying china crap. I use to have an auto-parts clutch/pressure plate/etc and they don't last, their clutch disc are okay, but their bearings tend to fail. I also don't like the feel of their clutch. The ford clutch is just more grabby/smooth compared to a cheap one.

Also included in my price was resurfacing my flywheel (at 200k I decided this time to have it done).
125.00 is cost of the clutch kit at advance auto parts. That was last place I bought one at 200k. I have had mine done twice, every 100k and have had no issues thus far. I'm with you on the oem parts, if I had deeper pockets would not mind picking them up, but like I said, have had no issues with going with after market clutch kit.

The slave was so shot and the idiot who did it before me put the wrong slave in, so no matter how it was on there it would bolt up. No, the tool was not left in there. The bad/improper slave was also tearing things up because it wouldn't release as far as it was supposed to for the truck. In addition to this the guy I bought it from also put the wrong tranny in there. Well, after all new everything it runs and shifts like a dream. It failed inspection yesterday for lower ball joints, headlight adjustment, and parking brake light. I can fix the second two and it's at the mechanic's now for lower ball joints since I don't have a ball joint press.

Beyond crappy. I didn't realize what a can of worms this thing was when I bought it. All together I'm looking at around 2100 I've spent in this repair session after these lower ball joints go in.
