You have to be in neutral and you can't be moving. Otherwise it won't work.

Then it sounds like something is preventing the electric motor from engaging your reduction gears. Others who have dealt with this should chime in.

Re: 4wd Low Not Working
im thinking you are correct, like i said earlier once in a while it will shift into 4low. i'll gues i'll check all the wiring maybe i missed a loose wire or a bad conector.

Re: 4wd Low Not Working
try this: with truck in gear, Hold the brake down, then turn the switch to 4Lo.
see if that works.

Re: 4wd Low Not Working
i have tried everything holding down the brake pedal puting the truck in neutral engaging 4low while not moving. i started the truck and tried to put in in 4 low and the light came on but then i tried to put it in 4 low again a nothing. did everything exactly the same steped on the brake, put it in neutral and not moving at all. i also shut down and started the truck again and 4low did not engage.

Re: 4wd Low Not Working
Directly from a 98 Ranger Owners Manual
Shifting between 4X4 HIGH (4WD high) and 4X4 LOW (4WD low)
1. Bring the vehicle to a stop.
2. Depress the brake.
3. Place the gearshift in N (Neutral) (automatic transmission) or depress
the clutch (manual transmission).
4. Move the 4WD control to the 4X4 HIGH or 4X4 LOW position.
