Default Trouble shifting into first

Hi everyone. I just bought a 2003 2.3L 4cyl manual with 140,000 miles and I'm having trouble shifting into first. Basically when I'm at a stop and I try to shift from neutral to first the shifter goes half-way and sticks. At that point I can force it all the way into first, or I can go back into neutral and try another gear and then shift into first cleanly (all with the clutch pedal fully pressed down). Sometimes I'll think I'm in first and when I let out the clutch I hear an awful grinding noise.

The clutch was replaced last year but not professionally. I've been reading some other posts on here and it sounds like maybe the slave cylinder, but I'm not having any trouble with reverse so I thought I'd see if anyone has another idea. Thanks!

slave was my thought too, maybe cause that's what it was on mine. Have you checked the fluid reservoir, and underneath for leaks?

at this point, especially if you think possible repair deficiencies, might be a good idea to change the tranny fluid, checking for loose metal inside. I think mine has a magnetic drain plug too. After it's drained stick your finger inside, or possibly even a pick-up magnet, checking for loose stuff in there. I've never done it but considering next change I'll drain it through a kitchen strainer or similar

Hey Le Bear, I checked the master and it's full. No leaks that I can see. Taking it to the shop tomorrow, will post results.

Is it happening when the air is on or off (ac or vent) ? Or does it matter?
