It's like a check engine light for the transmission. Plug in your code reader and see what's there...

One time my O/D light started to flash after giving the truck a good work out doing some snow hill climbs. At the time I just assumed the trans overheated. After plugging in the scanner about 2 weeks later there was a code for trans fluid over temp.

But since yours was coming back on the next day, there may be something else wrong.

Heard also it might just be the speed sensor.

My overdrive light just started blinking also, i'm having problems between 2-3 gear. Slipping before it shifts. Then a loud clunk. its an automatic. I checked the fluids and it seemed fine. Also it seems to have an erratic idle, 700 and then up to 1200. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks

Mine did it once. I had water in the fluid. Flushed it out and everything is fine now. A buddy of mine that works for ford said that a lot of times the connector on the side of the trans will get dirty and cause the light to blink.

It ended up being the speed sensor, that was making the shifting problems. I'm glad it was only that. 40 bucks or so
