Tough shiffting into first / falls out of gear...

My transmission works fine 90% of the time. I can always downshift into 1st when rolling to a stop. BUT, when I am at a complete stop and go to put it in 1st, sometimes It will not go in. I can rev the engine a little, then put it into gear. Other times, I think its in 1st, and I will let off the clutch to go and it falls out of gear.

Drives me nuts. Sometimes I just can't get it in first, like when coming from a redlight, and I just have to throw it back to 2nd and go from there.

I've seen these additives you can add to transmission fluid, but I figured that they were more for automatics....?

Any ideas on why it could be hard to get into first? this may be a normal thing with manuals...I've never had one until my Ranger.

Yeh, i gotta say, the drivetrain section doesn't get me many views or responses. So you have the same problem?

x2 on the same problem w/ 1st and reverse... I was told once it might have to do with the clutch disengaging properly but not sure how accurate that is

ive got the exact same problem guys. i think it is the synchronizers are bad. i hope i dont need my transmission rebuilt. but it only does it once in a while so im not gonna worry about it yet...
sure hope some of the gear heads could shed some light

I'm going to have the master cylinder and slave bled and see if that helps. I'll be back with results.

sounds good. its especially bad when you go to pull in traffic and it falls out. especially when you waited 5 minutes for a open spot in traffic!!

Mine also does this. My friend's 93 with a 4.0 does it too. I think it must be normal. Bu like posted above, mine only does it every once in a while. And when it does happen, I put it into 2nd and then 1st and it works fine.

i dont think its normal, every car iv owned has been manual. they all shifted into first very smooth. but since this seems to be a common problem with the ranger it just might be normal, im just not used to it

Yeh, it is something I have to get used to. Not a big deal, just annoying. I'm sure when this thing only had a couple thousand miles on it, this didnt happen, but thats not the case lol.
