You want the old fluid to stay in with a transmission with higher mileage it keeps the friction on the clutches

They should it would be useless to do it without changing filter.
A lot of times in old vehicles that's what is done. Change the filter but filter and reuse the same fluid

Re: Transmission Fluid
If I wanted to change the fluid myself on the automatic transmission (2003), what is the process and what are the parts that I will need?

Re: Transmission Fluid
Mats = new fluid in adequate amounts, new filter and pan gasket; process = remove pan, R&R filter, much fluid is drained by default, pull a tranny cooler line and with engine running, replace volume lost with fresh fluid after pan drop and filter R&R and fluid replenish.

Still, I would think that being proactive and changing the fluid is a lot better than doing absolutely nothing.

$49 seems way too inexpensive because I know as a fact that my local Ford dealer charges close to $200, and other places, such as a Quick Lube is $100 - $150.

I completely understand that, and for certain things, a dealer should be used, such as a transmission fluid exchange. They will hopefully be the most trained and use the correct friction modifier that is required. I would not trust a Quick Lube or Value Place for that. Also, $49 seems "to good to be true", and when dealing with any estimate, there will naturally be a range in price. Just remember that the consumer "gets what they pay for".

It is a personal preference, but I still wouldn't trust a Quick Lube for that particular service.

Totally hijacked this poor guy's thread, but he received great advice earlier. What do you do for a living because you said that "you worked in a shop"? Like a technician? Irony not trusting a shop because your livelihood depended on customers not knowledgable, unable, or unwilling to work on the vehicle themself. I for one have little desire, no knowledge, and no place to work on a vehicle because I live in an apt. and not a very mechanical person.
