Hey yall ive looked on alot of other threads and i cant seem to find what im looking for. I Have a 1996 Ford Ranger 3.0 2wd. I want to convert it to 4wd and no i dont want to just go buy one. What all do i need? Is any fabrication needed? Should i go with a straight axel front? Can i use an explorer as a donor even though they have 4.0 motors and i have the 3.0?

You don't have the skills to be able to do it. A normal auto tech student who never really truly worked on cars before will not be able to do it. And just the fact you have to ask & can not find the information yourself shows you don't have the required skills to be able to do it. Also you will be spending around 2-3grand trying to do this swap.

Take it or leave it, I'm just being real about your skills. Someone who is able to take on this kind of task don't need to ask basic questions like this. Don't like what I'm saying? Want to report my posts? Go ahead, it wont do anything for you, and it aint gonna hurt me.
Also, being an auto tech student doesn't mean anything, one of my friends is one, and he knows nothing about cars, and has never even changed a battery or tire on a car in his life.
But if you want help, most likely you will need a similar year ford ranger or madza B3000, with the same engine as your truck. You will then use that as a donor to swap over the tranny, suspension, front axle, rear axle(unless ratios are the same) and the drive shafts, halfshafts, etc. That would be the easier way to swap things over so it will be a straight bolt in. Also if you get it with the same axle lengths, that will be easier to just swap driveshafts if needed. Also it is better to get a donor ranger that already has a rear axle with a limit slip, it will aid you with offroading and in the snow. You will also need the wiring from the donor truck as well as the radio bezs that has the 4x4 switch. All rangers, unless its the rare model FX4 with twin sticks, will have auto engaging 4x4, ie: will not have a shiftier to put in 4x4 low & high. Ford calls this 4x4 on the fly I believe. Also getting a 2006 3.0 axle might be worth wild because I believe from 2004 and up they had rear disc brakes, which will help when stopping and is a good upgrade from stock braking, the braking is 100times better with 4wheel disc breaks in a ranger.

Just so you know OP, this guy has been following me around all week long harassing me, I keep reporting him, for his harassment, but the admins wont do anything about it. Reporting does nothing. And @ ford4thot, you sir can eat a.
Also as you can tell, he has no point in even being in this section of the forums where he knows nothing, and has nothing to offer for help, proving my point he has been following me around this last week.

Also, I tend to help others who can help themselves & not the other way.

Re: 3.0 2wd to 4wd conversion
Are you planing on converting to IFS or just going strait to a solid axle? I've always heard if your trying to do a direct swap IFS its better to just buy a different truck. So IMO if your going to convert it joust go ahead and do a SAS. I think it would be more strait forward.
