Default did ford put bad transmissions in the rangers?

My transmission died at around 70,000 or so... had to get it rebuilt at a cost of $4000...

Ive done all the maintenance to the truck, and I don't dog it... I rarely haul anything and never go off road...

so why did the trans die at 70k? were the transmissions on the rangers junk?

Just wondering what others think. anyone else have to replace their ranger transmission?

Nope, the 5R55E and 5R44E transmissions are actually very strong. They have some issues but are usually fixed with simple fixes but most mistake them for being blown out and then pay out the ass for a full rebuild. Mine was slipping slightly in 2nd gear, tranny shop said it was junk and needed rebuilt. I called BS and after doing some homework I adjusted the bands myself and replace the EPC solenoid and its been fine since, that was years ago.

actually, I spent $2750.. the first time... after 6 attempts, that shop never could fix it. next time I hit the dealer... dealer fixed it right nearly $4000... looking back, I wish I set the truck on fire and not put $7000 in transmission work for a 12 yr old truck. lol

I believe they switched from the 4 speed 4R44E and 4R55E to the 5 speed 5R44E and 5R55E transmissions around 1997. The 3.slows got the 5R44E while the 4.0's got the slightly stronger 5R55E. The "5R" refers to five forward gears with reverse and the "44" and "55" notes how much torque each one is rated at. The "44" is rated for 440 ft-lb's and the "55" is rated for 550 ft-lbs. The "E" at the end signifies that its electronically controlled. Your truck being a 99 with the 4.0 it likely has the 5R55E.
