BAD Drivetrain Clunk
For starters, I'm in a 2003 ranger, 2.3, 5 speed.
I have a really bad drivetrain clunk. It happens when:
Letting off the gas,
Getting on the gas,
Letting go of the clutch, any gear except for 1st and reverse.
Sometimes it's bad enough for me to worry about a window breaking (kind of kidding, but not really)
I've had it ever since I bought the truck. I replaced the clutch, slave, and master just a few thousand miles ago, but no change.
Suggestions would be great, I have no idea what to do...

Re: BAD Drivetrain Clunk
slop in the drivetrain, go and try and turn your driveshaft in a circular motion in neutral back and forth and you will probably have some slop.

Re: BAD Drivetrain Clunk
i dont really think its a problem that can be fixed easily, unless you rebuild your rear differential so there's no slack in the gears. My truck does the same exact thing and have just learned to roll with it. It would probably be pricey to fix it out of pocket, but if it's warrantied, I would deff take it in and get it looked at

Re: BAD Drivetrain Clunk
Definitely way out of warranty (153,000 miles)
It's extremely frustrating. Feels like the vehicle isn't working properly.

Re: BAD Drivetrain Clunk
You might want to compare the slop in your RE against one that has low miles and use that as a benchmark. Bear in mind that lower gears (numerically) typically means there will be more backlash in the gearbox, which = more slop (and howl/whine). This is perfectly normal and is a consequence of the gear cut, in particular, the pinion gear. If you don't have enough backlash, you'll overheat the RE. IN my neck of the woods, trucks are like azzholes, and if a RE was needed and if I had an old vehicle, I'd get one at the Pull and Hack and they go for $90 all day long.
I will tell you something to watch out for and it's something that will cause driveline slop and it's happened to me (more than once). That something is, driveline slop caused by a failing clutch disk, in particular, the rivets holding the thing together coming apart. What's happend is the center pieces that are C/T the input shaft on the tranny are coming lose from the disk assembly, thanks to the rivets coming lose. You might want to check yours for that, just to be sure. You haven't lived life until your clutch fails in bumper to bumper, stop and go, 5PM traffic in a big town, and the next off ramp is three miles ahead.

Re: BAD Drivetrain Clunk
Well, I believe I have narrowed it down to the rear end. Tons of play in it.
I really don't know where to go from here. Never had any experience with rebuilding rear ends, or anything of the sort.
Suggestions?
Also, I'm not sure if it's important or not, but my speedometer is exactly 7 mph off. Not sure if that means a previous owner installed a different gear, or if I just have something messed up..

Re: BAD Drivetrain Clunk
"Tons of play" could be relative depending on the person, so I'll trust you did your homework to prove the rear end needs service. With that said, and reading where you mentioned, "Never had any experience with rebuilding rear ends", I have to ask, do you know what pinion depth, backlash, crush sleeve, and a dial indicator are/do, just to name a few things? If not, then you're going to want to either see a $hop and have them set up your rear axle for you, and probably with a new ring and pinion due to wear. The alternative is to junkyard a replacement and install yourself, which, if the junkyards in your neck of the woods are reasonable, will be the most cost effective solution. An 8.8" RE might be in your future.
You *could* get your hands on the tools and parts to set up an axle, but you'd do yourself a huge favor by having a buddy or someone who has done one before help you and show you how to do this. If you don't know what you're doing and if you don't set it up right, the pitfalls include howl/noise, excessive backlash (like you have now), and too tight, which will generate lots of heat and could damage the ring/pinion. Replacing the ring/pinion is not a drop it in, bolt it up and call it a day affair, it's a tolerance critical setup that needs to be done right.

Re: BAD Drivetrain Clunk
I have a similar clunk in my 03 automatic. A ford mech friend said something about pulling the driveline and packing the housing with some magical blue grease. But i dont get if he is saying on the tranny side or rear end

Re: BAD Drivetrain Clunk
I'm thinking I'll go ahead and replace the rear end.
Is there any certain year that I need for the ranger?
I'm going for an 8.8 out of an explorer, but I'm not sure whether I need disc/drum, etc...

^ talking about the slip yoke on the drive shaft itself. I did that on my truck and it did not change the little smack i get between gears and what not. Mine and the OP's is deff from slop in the rear. No point of fixing it unless you want to re-gear, put in an LS, or money isn't a problem.
