shift correction kit questions??
i just recently bought a shift correction kit off of ebay and it didnt come with any gaskets for the valve body or reverse servo or intermediate servo.. its for a 4r55e, 5r55e i know i need a filter and pan gasket but i was wondering if i really need new gaskets to go along with dissassembling the valve body?? i was gonna try oriellys but forgot..

Re: shift correction kit questions??
I do these kits regularly and yes, you will need the gaskets. Dont go to your local parts house....either get them from Ford or go to your transmission shop. Make sure to get both plate gaskets...one for each side.

Re: shift correction kit questions??
No low fluid pressure at wide open throttle, harsh 1-2 shift, lag into O/D, sometimes a "whine noise" as well as delayed or inconsistent shift pattern.

Re: shift correction kit questions??
2nd 3rd shift could very well be a symptom, but not the only symptom. If this is the only issue the transmission has, it is probily an isolated issue...ie. band, servo, intermediate clutches worn, etc...but the valve body is a "brain" for the system. The automatic transmission is nothing but a hydraulic drum which depends on hydraulic pressures as well as centrifugal forces. If there is a valve body issue, there would be several symptoms. If I can help more, please feel free to put the issue out there and I will surely do my best.

Re: shift correction kit questions??
not trying to thread jack here, but you seem to know your transmissions. What would you suggest me to check if I can't get my overdrive disengage? The transmission shifts fine and there is the very rare slipping while shifting. I can count through all the gears and its hitting everyone of them, but when I try to turn the O/D off I get nothing. I have already replaced the button in the shifter as well.

Re: shift correction kit questions??
occasional slipping isn't good, but could just be a pressure problem. So, Here is the options....O/D uses the highest fluid pressures, so here's what i need to know in order to rule out the few things it could be. Does it lose low pressure at wide open throttle?(when ya floor it does it feel sluggish or like it is slipping, but shifting fine? does the shifts only allow the RPM's to drop 500 or lower?). the occasional slipping could mean a valve body issue, bus also could be a seeping seal. I ned more info. year, model and make (so i can determine the transmission) mileage, service history.

Re: shift correction kit questions??
Here is the venue for the O/D circuit. EPC solenoid ( controlls hydraulic fluid pressure), Shift solenoid (opens a valve that controlls the servo pressure which tightens and loosens band for the shift), Servo piston (which just controls the band), O/D clutch piston (which compresses the clutches as well as releases them, works with the band durring shift points) and the input shaft that the O/D actually rides on (in most Ford Transmissions). If the O/D isn't engaging, it is one of these components or could be several. The diagnostics are fairly easy though. I will help walk you threw the diagnostics. First, what color is the fluid? is it brown, black or smell burnt?

Thank you for the reply,
I have had the truck for a week now and here is a better description,
Yes it really only seems to be 2-3 shift under regular throttle off of start.
If I really give it the gas off the line it seems to shift ok 90% of the time.
Two other odd things I parked on a hill nose up for an hour, it then kinda slipped in 1st also but just the one time.
Also one time when going around a sweeping curve at about 45 it slipped slightly.
If I let off of the gas the instant it starts to slip just for a second it will shift then I can give it the gas, so this is what I have been doing so it doesn't do more damage.
The fluid is light red and does not smell burned and looks to be new.
Also it seems like it likes to be in overdrive even at low speeds, so lets say 30mph it will be at 1200rpms. It will down shift if you gas it though.

Re: shift correction kit questions??
Do me a favor...on level ground, start engine and let it come to normal operating temperature without driving...check the fluid level in neutral then park. If the levels are equal and full, then we have a fluid pressure issue, which is usually the EPC solenoid. When I do a shift correction kit in these transmissions, I always change this solenoid. It is like 80 bucks, but well worth it in the end. Beats doing it twice. If the levels are different then we have a different issue that may get intense, but do-able. By difference in levels I mean a significant difference.

Re: shift correction kit questions??
wow
think i might have found some answers to my trans problem with Lonncarr posts.
2005 XLT 4x2 3.0L 124,000 trans oil was just off red a bit we droped tranny pan it was clean no girt to be found filter look good but was changed, last drain and filter change was at 60,000
Yeah my trans feels like it bucks in and out of O/D at 45-50ish at low low power excel on up hill grade. Or set on cruise at 60-65 i noticed it doing going up hill grade too. if I stomp on the gas I get no symptoms it just gets up and goes. All this started after I had both head's replaced the day I picked up the truck.
So does this sound like it needs that Shift correction kit & EPC solenoid ?
thanks for your time!!!!!!!!!!1

I am doing these two TSB ( TSB # 03-22-10 supersedes 03-11-9,02-13-8 and 02-08-2 ) kits tomorrow when the parts come in and will post how it goes, and yes lonncarr seems you know you sh*t.
1L5Z-7Z490-FA plate control
3L5Z-7M203-JA Valve assy
Also doing filter, odd but even the dealer could not tell me what trans filter the thing takes, they even e-mailed the factory and they didn't know since it was manufactured in late 99 it could have been two different ones , both of which they didn't even carry in stock.

Re: shift correction kit questions??
Good times ! Pulled the pan tonight after work, got the obligatory trans fluid shower,, on a more interesting note, there was a long bolt laying in the bottom of the pan ?
Oh,oh, well seems it goes in the corner of the valve body right next to
# 1 shift solenoid, hmm what's this the gasket hanging out in the same area ?
Wonder if this is why when I put the trans down into 1st gear at 40mph it just coasts with no engine breaking to a stop ???

Re: shift correction kit questions??
WOW!!! Sorry to hear about the trans fluid shower....ugh! I thought it was only me who gets them...LOL. Long bolt in oil pan is not going to be as big a deal as ya thought. I get that once in a while. Filter is a common filter at your local parts counter....If ya get the shift correction kit, here is my advice...TAKE YOUR TIME and USE THE EXTRA TOW SPRINGS. You won't regret it. Oh...and what in the world is that about 40 MPH in 1st gear? Dammitt mannnn...wayyyy too fast for 1st. Gonna blow the planetary all to hell like that...Anyways....if ya need any help I will be glad to help. Good Luck...
