Thumbs up Rear End L/S

I appreciate everyone posting in these forums, it's saved me a ton of time while doing the research for this project.
I've got a 94 Ranger with 16 in Mickey Thompsons, and beefier tires.
I tow sometimes, and play/slide around a lot. It kills me not having a locking rear end right now, especially when im sitting on a wet boat ramp roasting one tire trying to get up it.
I've currently got the code 84 axle; an open 7.5" axle, wtih 3.45 gear ratios.
What I really want is a posi rear axles, and I would love to be able to slip disc brakes on that bad boy.
I know my year ranger doesn't come with the discs; and I could live without them.
SO, in a perfect world, (one where i dont have to buy a 300 dollar setup from ford, or do major fabrication work like flipping springs or having to rebuild my diff)
what axle(s)would bolt up under mine. I like the gear ratio, but would be willing to go another route. Same with the discs. I know a lot of people do explorer/bronco rear axles as well, and I would certainly be willing to do that.
I'm looking for a pretty straight swap. Is this at all possible or should I go look for unicorns?
THANKS!

explorer axles are 31 spline with disc brakes...all you have to do is cut/reweld the spring perches...

----------

but my old ranger had 4.10 gears with L/S...you want R7 axle code...i forget what the 31 spline code is

Juat remember that if youre 4x4 and you change the rear gear ratio, you have to change the front too. If you dont, youll grenade your t-case.

4.10 l/s is what you need. I love that my Ranger has it. Saves me a lot of headache on slick terrain.

Yeah look up axle codes for explorer and go to the junkyard and get the one with 31 spline, disc brakes, posi rearend and it will be a 8.8 with 4.10, Great upgrade from stock. It's what I'm gonna do soon. Mine has 7.5 3.73 and it doesn't like my 31s. You have to relocate the spring perches but if you do that and use the explorer springs you'll get 3 inch lift in rear.

Alright I'm loving the way this sounds so far... Is there an issue with switching to the 8.8 from the 7.5 since I'm swapping the entire rear end?

Did some research into those explorer rear ends... WOW. Id like discs, and I'm pretty car and motor savvy, but I think rewelding mounting brackets and setting pinion angles is a bit out of my league. Looks like the 8.8 with 10 inch drums will be the route I go. And probably a 1 piece driveshaft since mine is giving me hell. What year range fits the 94?

I've got an open rear-end too (7.5", 3.73) but I was thinking about keeping it and getting a powertrax no-slip. Its automatic locking rear-end reviews say it locks good and you just have to change driving style a little. So it will provide you with more traction when the l/s won't do what you need.

I'll answer my own question and say anything post 93. Now if anyone can find me an axle thats R6, R7 F6 or F7 that's not 500 I'll be set.

Try looking here: http://car-part.com/

In my neck of the woods old 8.8" Ranger axles with 3.73's and posi are abundant. In fact, if you find one in the pull and hack yard, it's $90, regardless of size, ratio, and posi.
