Default is it just my clutch or something bigger?

ill admit, i don't know jack squat about mechanics so i just wanted to post this and see what the problem is im having. my 1996 ranger 3.0 4x4 5 speed runs great. but when i push the clutch down it makes a bad sound. its sort of like a scratching sound or like something is being rubbed together if that makes sense. It shifts into 1-5 gear just fine, but it makes a grinding sound when i put it in reverse. like i said, i dont know much on the subject so if someone could help me out that would be great. thanks

The noise when you push down on the clutch sounds like a bad throwout bearing, the noise when going to reverse is a trans problem.

The sounds I wouldn't be so worried about but the grindin in rev. Try pumpin your clutch pedal before goin in rev. and see if that helps.

Listen to tomboy. She is right. The sound is the throwout bearing.

If you hear a "bad sound" when you press the clutch in it is not good. you need to "worry" about it. If you are idling with the clutch depressed and it eventually goes away its the TB. If not PB.
