M5OD-R1 Rebuild Kit
Hello guys, I am new to the forum and am looking for some trans advice. I have an '04 Edge with the Mazda M5OD-R1 manual. It has 87K miles and is gradually developing more pronounced bearing noise. It is most noticeable in neutral, 2nd, and 4th gears with clutch engaged. 1st, 3rd, and 5th are quieter, but not silent. It seems to be more than just the input shaft bearing, though, because even coasting with the clutch fully depressed you can still hear some minor noise. So I believe I have both input and output bearing issues. Other than the noise, it shifts normally and I have no clutch issues.
I am planning to pull the trans soon and replace the bearings and also possibly the synchro rings. I'll also do the clutch and slave as long as I'm in there. I've been doing some research and haven't found many choices for rebuild kits out there for this trans. One kit available is a Pro-King BK247 (bearings & seals only) and BK247BWS (adds synchro rings). Has anyone out there rebuilt this trans lately and if so, what is the best/recommended kit manufacturer to go with? I'm only looking for a reputable one w/high quality USA or Japanese bearings. Thanks.

Re: M5OD-R1 Rebuild Kit
Random question you check your u-joints yet? It's possible it's not the trans. Could be the slave bearing also. I have 173,000 on my 2000. And 221,000 on my 1996 with no trans noise. I would be surprised if it was actually the trans

Re: M5OD-R1 Rebuild Kit
Check e-bay, lots of kits offered there, and most have a phone#, you can call them directly. You can also get all the parts from fomoco, but high priced.

Re: M5OD-R1 Rebuild Kit
The trans bearing noise is present and actually most noticeable when the truck is stationary, idling with the clutch engaged in neutral. Everything goes silent when the clutch is disengaged in this condition. This tells me it isn't U-Joints (truck isn't even moving) and the slave throwout bearing is OK (spins only when clutch depressed). I haven't disconnected the driveshaft and inspected them, but the U-Joints don't feel sloppy when turning the driveshaft by hand under the truck.
I changed the fluid a few months ago and the shift rail plugs were dry and fluid level was fine. So I don't understand why the bearings are noisy already either. 87K seems very low. A tip for the forum, I did replace the fluid with Redline D4 ATF as discussed in a few other threads, and it did make an improvement in shift quality (significantly less notchy), however the bearing noise remained about the same.
Anyone have a specific rebuild kit brand recommendation? Or, has anyone had a good experience with a particular complete rebuilt trans brand?
Thanks.
