Default 1994 Ranger 3.0 2wd 5speed hard to shift through gears! Shyncros?

My 1994 Ranger 5 speed with the 3.0 it is hard to change gears when I first go into gear. After that it is a little easier to change gears. But once I go back into nuteral let off the clutch, then try to go into gear again it is hard to get it into gear. It does not do it when the truck is off. All of the signs are pointing at my synchros going bad but I have read about a lot of people having the same problem and just change the tranny fluid an it fixes it. Help a brotha out!

Check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. If its low then you may have a seal leak at the bell housing "slave" cylinder. Fill the master cylinder with the correct fluid and keep an eye out for spots in parking in the driveway/garage at home or when pulling out of one at the mall etc... Or your throwout bearing is worn out which could also indicate a new clutch is needed because the friction material is nearly gone.

I had have the same problem with difficulty going into first from being stopped, but rolling isn't as tough. I changed the trans fluid and it helped a good bit. But I have heard after changing trans fluid, your seals can leak or it can cause other probs.

Good luck tho!

Do what 20ranger says first. I.e. Check/ change tranny fluid and also check your clutch reservoir.

Then if those are fine suspect the MC.

Your throwout bearing would be making noise if it was bad. If there is no noise then the throw out and pilot bearing are probably fine.

I just went through this. I had tough shifting for a few years. It ended up being the clutch MC. To bleed these systems properly you need to remove the MC. If you are removing it you might as well replace it for $60. Mine shifts great now.

No noise from the throw out bearing. I am going to change the fluid Monday, it seems like a lot of people say this at the least helps the issue if not fix it. What weight gear oil would you guys suggest? Another thing, I checked all of my fluids under the hood and everything seems to be at level.

Remove the fill plug first. You use ATF IN THE TRANNY

Did you remove the cap from the MC reservoir and check the fluid?. It is attached to the driver fender, usually it is next to the power distribution box tucked away a little ?

I have not done that yet. But I use ATF fluid even in a 5 speed?

Yes the new transmissions have tighter tolerances now and 90 weight will make it harder if not impossible to shift properly.

Okay guys, I changed my fluid and checked all of my levels and nothing. I am going to bring it to a transmition shop and take advantage of their free check and see what they say. Well update when I know something, thanks guys!

I'll stick with my original DX. If you do not have a leak and there are no noises then install a new bench bled MC and gravity bleed it.

Let us know what AAMCO $AY$!
